Hey everyone. I’m sure almost all of us have dealt with medical records – either our own, or those of a loved one – at some point. Moving forward, most of us realize that an important part of taking care of ourselves is owning and understanding our health information. The advent of electronic medical record systems has made these medical records easier for us to access, but every time I have obtained a copy of my records, I have found making sense of them is entirely another story. I raise this because a new free consumer health resource  started by a Harvard Business School team is looking to do exactly this – making medical records more understandable – and I found the concept to be quite intriguing.

What do you all think about this idea? Would you use a tool like this to understand your medical records or those of a loved one? What sorts of features would you want to see?

hamilton,

From your link:

"We work directly with care providers to obtain your records; you will never have to upload a thing.  Best of all it is free"

What you are suggesting would be a breach of the HIPPA rules and regulations. All medical records and other individually identifiable health information used or disclosed by a covered entity in any form, whether electronically, on paper, or orally, are covered by the final rule.

Ensuring that health information is not used for non-health purposes. Health information covered by the rule generally may not be used for purposes not related to health care - such as disclosures to employers to make personnel decisions, or to financial institutions - without explicit authorization from the individual.

Patients should be talking with their  medical providers to clarify the information in their electronic record.

I have removed your link.
