Hi, First post here. Ill try to make this short but descriptive, as googling has led me nowhere.

Lets start with the symptoms I am having, and they all started at the same time: Palpitations, Bloating, Gas, Heartburn - all of which I have never really experienced prior to this. Should also add that i have no caffine and dont smoke.

I am 28 year old male, and i would consider myself rather healthy and active up until a week ago. I have an extremely high metabolism and usually feel hungry within hours after eating. Only condition I have is neck tension which i take cyclobenzaprine (flexeril) and small naproxen dose only when needed, usually no more than 1-2 times per week at the most... for about 3 years now. Never had a problem with them and they seem to work great.

One week and a day ago to be exact I layed down in bed, after having a glass of chocolate milk to down the prescription. I was startled by what felt like a "twitch" in my sternum area about half hour later. They repeated randomly with no specific pattern, I didnt want to believe it was palpitations. The next day I went to work anyway, still with this feel of a twitch or spasm accompanied by a feeling of fear or loss of breath when it happens. It was happening anywhere from every few seconds to every minute. I also noticed that I felt very FULL which is unusual for me. I could barely eat anything, and everything i did try to eat caused me to burp like crazy (also unusual for me). After coming home from work my wife convinced me to go to the ER.

I told the doctor about what I was feeling and had ECG, blood presssure, blood tests (dont know what for), and all came back negative. I was prescribed an anti-spasmatic and stomach relief (cant remember the names) as the dr thought it was stomach spasms, i took them as directed, went to work the next day with no change in the symptoms at all. Still seriously bloated and felt palpitations during almost EVERY bite of food or drink of water. All i could eat was 1 toast and jam, and some water. I never felt nausea, just extremely bloated or full and heartburn. All bathroom functions basically normal still.

2-3 days in I went back to the ER in the morning where I described my symptoms to another doctor. He did another ECG, blood work again for additional tests, etc. Nothing was found, so they basically told me to go home. I returned to the ER at 5:30pm specifically stating that I need someone to listen to my heart. The doctor finally said "irregular heartbeat, palpitations". I could see them on the monitor when the happen, there would be an extra beat and a pause randomly while laying there still, moving, etc it didnt matter. I had more blood tests done, ecg again, etc. I was give a beta-blocker and it SEEMED that the intensity of the palpitations went down a bit. I then went home after over an hour of monitoring (which they never seemed to come and check). Was told not to keep taking the previously prescribed meds, so i stopped.

Began taking new prescribed beta-blocker Propranolol. Over next couple days, taking it easy, still feel bloated, heartburn, gassy, and palpitations. Had ultrasound of abdominal area and apparently nothing was found. Everything I have been eating during this whole time has been light, non spicy etc to prevent making it worse, but yet STILL have heartburn over a week later, along with gas and palpitations. It seems like the excessive gas, heartburn and palpitations are possibly related but I dont know. The symptoms all came at once and havent subsided yet. I have been struggling to work as I am VERY uncomfortable feeling. The heartburn and gas can be felt all day long like a "bubbling" as ive heard it described before, along with palpitations (or spasms?).

I could have wrote more but you get the idea. After searching and searching online, I am still unsure what this may be. Any insight, advice or comments would be great, Thanks.

Welcome to HealingWell.  I am sorry it is under these circumstances but we do stick pretty close together and everyone on here is supportive and kind so please stick with us and will will help you in ancy way we can.

The first thing I noticed if I read correctly is that you are "going to the ER" for evaluation which is the right thing to do for what you feel is an emergency, however,  the ER physicians only deal with an acute situation and should never be a substitute for a family physician.

May I kindly suggest that you make an appointment with your family physician for further testing or even with a Cardiologist.

The causes of irregular heartbeats are many and not all are related to a heart problem.  This is where your private physicain shines as he will look at the big picture.  The ER physician makes sure your heart is OK but does not get into check other causes of the irregular heartbeats.

I suspect you will feel much more comfortable having your own physician looking out for your well-being.

Here are a couple of suggestions you may try on your own to decrease the palpitations: cut back on caffeine, avoid extra sugar, stay well hydrated, and relax when you can.  Leave work at work and make your home time your time.

Blessings,
Kitt

2 weeks after it began the symptoms have slowly reduced, but still there.

I live in small town, nearest city is hundreds of miles away. There are no patients being accepted as there are not enough family doctors, I have tried to get a family doctor for a long while now. The wait to book an appointment for any other doctor in the area is at least 3 weeks. Its rediculous, the ER is the only option for me. I am still waiting for an opening at the clinic.

Can you guys move this thread to GERD, I have a feeling after doing my own research its a Hiatus Hernia.

Hi,
I have the exact same symptoms and have had many, many gastro and cardio tests. My palpitations are triggered by GERD (acid reflux.) If I keep the GERD under control, the palpitations are under control. I have a diagnosed arrhythmia that gets triggered when my stomach acts up. Make an appointment with a gastro and get evaluated.
Chocolate, high fat meals, large meals, laying down right after eating or drinking will cause reflux and reflux will cause palpitations in many people. See a good gastro and get a work up and get put on the right path.

Hi thanks for the reply,
It has now been almost 3 weeks and still same symptoms but just not as bad (or im getting more used to it if thats even possible). Ive maintained a very healthy diet over the last 3 weeks, that might be helping. Slowly adding more daring foods back into my diet to see if it triggers anything, although by daring I still mean regular healthy foods aside from the usual chicken and rice ive been eating.

Just yesterday I finally got in to see a doctor who booked me for a barium Xray. Ill update you on the results. Have you had one done? Doc said that an endoscopy may still be needed. I was prescribed omeprazole and told to take it for a month once per day. I havent started it yet. Any opinions on this?

Ive been trying some stretches that may relieve hiatus hernia symptoms a bit. All i know is that if I can burp the symptoms are decreased immensely almost instantly until the next time i eat or feel uncomfortable.

Welcome to the forum Anyhelp and Kelly.

In addition to what Kitt recommended, if you think eating may have a connection to your arrhythmias you might want to start keeping a food journal to see if there are any SPECIFIC FOOD TRIGGERS. Is there a problem with eating or drinking anything, or do certain foods bring on your symptoms? There are tons of old posts on food triggers and heart in old threads. Check out the search box at the top of the page.

I had reflux symptoms to only certain foods, not the usual "reflux foods." My trigger foods are an acquired sensitivity. Most processed foods will set it off.

The barium swallow should show whether you have a hiatal hernia or problem with the valve closing. Endoscopy doesn't show what happens when you swallow, only damage or if the stomach is staying above the diaphragm.

I had a barium swallow xray done a couple days ago out of town in the nearest city. I should know next week if anything was found, and if so I will update so others may have some idea as to what the cause is. The worst parts is not knowing WHY it is happening. Once diagnosed, it is sometimes easier to deal with and try to do whatever it takes to prevent the symptoms.

Ive seen 5 different doctors in a row who think that there is no relation at all between the reflux/gas problems I am having after eating and PVC's that occur during that time - but a simple google search will show the hundreds of people who posted experiencing this same condition. I had to specifically request a barium xray as the doctors seemed to think there was no need for it.

Thanks for the replies.

This is something serious and you should not take any chance , consult to your doctor as soon a possible as, in case of any severe problem it will be resolved on time.

Arrhythmias can be related to the digestive system. I get this a lot. Mine are usually triggered by foods I don't tolerate irritating the esophagus or stomach, but I've had tachycardia bouts from burst diverticula also. My heart and GI doctors don't believe me, but my allergist has seen it in other patients.

Google "linked angina" and "gastroesophageal reflex." There are a lot of scientific papers.
