I had a list of things that I wanted to discuss with my Cardiologist yesterday when I saw him. tongue   One of my questions was in regards to the intake of Calcium and arterial blockage and heart disease.  I told him that I took at least 800 mg. to a 1,000 mg. of Calcium per day, plus soy milk and yogurt and did he think that it could cause problems with a buildup of calcium in my arteries.

His answer was direct and to the point.  "No."  He said you need the calcium.

The only side effect that I could personally find re the intake of calcium was people who were inclined to get kidney stones, taking high amounts of calcium might not be a good thing.  They should discuss this with their Dr.'s.

Your body excretes excess calcium in urine and feces, so there is usually not a worry with that.

Hugs, Teri  tongue

I take postassium, 20 MEQ. Potassium is a mineral that works with sodium for proper electrolyte balance, contributes to heart muscle health, changes glycogen to glucose, and promotes healing. Potassium can also be used to treat stress, diabetes, hypertension, hypoglycemia, water balance and distribution, muscle & nerve cell function, kidney and adrenal function. The tablets I take are GIGANTIC, although inexpensive compared to any other medicines that I take. And it's not something I can get over the counter; prescription only I believe. At least that's how I get them. I asked my cardiologist if I could get this from food and he said absolutely not. Other than that, I was taking a generic version of Senior Centrum for a few months, but I never felt any better on it. I suppose I should takea multi-vitamin though. Do others take multi vitamins?

Kathy, I take the extra calcium daily per my PCP's request and I also take a multivitamin as well.  (It's called for Women over 50) lol
