I couldn't find pvd in a search to see if this topic has been addressed before. I get a newsletter from the ADA, and read this today. I wanted to share with those who have diabetis and heart disease, although it would pertain to diabetics regardless! I had my bloodwork done for my appt. with my cardiologist on Wednesday. I'm hoping it's much improved. The triglyceride's were too high last time.

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) — disease in the blood vessels outside of the heart — is common in people with diabetes. PVD develops when the fats in your blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, can build up on the walls of your arteries, thickening and hardening them. Diabetes often causes an increase in blood fats, which can lead to the thickening process. This is why your health care provider is concerned about checking your cholesterol and triglyceride levels, two important blood fats. If you have high cholesterol or high triglycerides, you may be asked to change your diet and to try to lose some weight. You may need to take medication to help control high cholesterol or high triglycerides. It is important to control blood fats because the thickening of the arteries that leads to PVD can also cause heart attacks and strokes. You are at greater risk for these illnesses when you have diabetes.

Thanks, Kathlyn!  I have diabetes, too, though so far mine has been treated with diet.  (I'm lucky!)

That was a great explanation~there are so many different variables with Heart Disease and you're right, being diabetic certainly is one of them~thanks!  yeah

Teri, how high are your sugar levels?  And, diet is bringing them down?  I have had 3 elevated glucose readings but never with a 10-12 hour fast.  Not sure if I am pre-diabetic which thew doctor says I may be...Called insulin resistance.  Daughter is diabetic and on insulin.

Will go next week for glucose on a 12 hour fast.

Hi TexRose! cool

I'm doing pretty good til I go on steroids or something like that for my allergies-it causes my sugar levels to zoom up!

Here is another site below that will explain another test that I feel is a really good one to diagnose and follow someone with diabetes.  It's called an a1c test.  Ask your Dr. about this one.
