Hi all, am new here and glad I have found this forum as I hope it can answer a question that has been bugging me for 7 years now.
Short background:-
In my mid 20's I noticed my heart would beat abnormally sometimes, would add beats, miss beats, slow HR down, increase HR, stutter etc. Triggers being mainly hard exercise or alcohol. Being stupid I thought everyone had this and ignored it and carried on leading a mainly healthy lifestyle (I say mainly, I did drink too much, but I was in my mid 20's) and exercised 6 days a week cycling and rowing. Fitness was relatively high. Episodes of what I found out to be Atrial Fibrillation started happening more and more often, probably 2 or 3 times a week and when they did understandably my cycling or rowing took a hit, I couldnt pull the same splits on the rowing machine as I could normally/speed was down on the bike and was out of breath, the usual AF symptoms. Anyway, got this checked out by a doctor finally when I was 29 or 30 and had Ablation Therapy, didnt work so had a 2nd Ablation Therapy. Seemed to have sorted things out and now I dont get AF and all I have to take is a 75mg Aspirin daily so all good on that front.
Finally my question:-
My resting heart rate (RHR) used to be 35 before the 2 x Ablation Therapies. I know too low and all that but thats what it was. After the procedures my RHR rose over night to over 60, and over the past 7 years of hard training still it has only come down to about 50 now. All healthy enough so no real worries, I just wonder why that happened? My main question is, my fitness has never been the same again, yes I am 7 years older but the same applies from 5 or 6 years ago where I was younger (funny that). My cardiologist at the time said there is no reason as to why I would never get my fitness back, but there must be a reason, the only thing that changed was having the Ablation Therapy, I still train hard/harder than before and probably lead an overall healthier lifestyle now.
So why did my RHR increase so rapidly?
Why is my fitness way down on what it used to be before the Ablation Therapy? (Discounting the age increase thing which I know will affect it to a degree).
Anyone else experience this or heard of this?
Sorry for the long post, didnt mean it.
