My whole life my heart would skip a beat once in a blue month. Every 6 months. Once a year. Always an odd feeling but never concerned me. It would always feels like there was a pause where there should be a beat and then it would follow with a very strong beat that I could feel in my throat.

Well about 6 months ago I changed up my routine lunch that I make at home and started bringing fresh spinach. Maybe 3 or 4 times in a 2 week span my heart would skip after I started eating the spinach so I stopped bringing it and then kind of forgot about it.

Well about 2 months ago I had pretty routine knee surgery to clean out some debris. The debris prevented me from really doing any cardio over the last 3 years as my knee would lock up on me. Well I've spent the last 3 or 4 weeks really working out pretty hard. Biking or swimming every day. And what I also did was I decided to start bringing the spinach for lunch again forgetting why I quit in the first place. Well about 3 weeks ago I was eating a burrito for dinner and noticed my heart skipped. Then it did it again the next night for dinner. But both times I was in a hurry and just took a few deep breathes, slowed down, and I was fine. But then the following week at lunch I noticed it a few times again.

I hadnt felt it for about a week but then the last four days its gotten more severe. Always in the past it would skip once and then wouldnt happen again. Well the last few days it would start while I ate lunch and then would continue the rest of the day especially if I was doing anything really active that would get my heart rate up. And then yesterday, I only felt it once or twice but also felt as though something was stuck in my throat all day as if I had to burp.

It seems odd to me that spinach would be the cause of this. But I havent eaten any for the last few days. And I havent been working on my cardio at all thinking that maybe I've overworked myself after basically not doing much cardio for 3 years. So far today I havent felt it skip but my chest does feel odd as though I'm real gassy. And I havent really been hungry the last couple days as though Im somewhat bloated. After reading these boards I've come across the vagus nerve and some of the symptoms others have had with that seem similar to mine. There is a cardiologist right next to my work so I'm gonna schedule an appointment. It doesnt really hurt and I dont feel winded but its definitely worrisome.

Does this sound like it could be the vagus nerve acting up?

It is ok to skip a beat here and there, however, just to be sure you should probably see your doctor. We are not doctors, so we can't really tell you what is going on, but we can share our personal experience. It can be so many things, including acid reflux (your stuck in throat sensation). The bloated could even be gas. You shouldn't worry yourself, or you will stress yourself out. It is normal for your heart rate to go up with activity too. So keep us posted on what doc says

Well I went to the doc this morning. Not a cardiologist just a family primary care doc. They ran an EKG and she listened to my heart with the a stethoscope. She said the EKG looked good and didnt hear anything abnormal with the heartbeat. She thinks its GI related and told me its not uncommon for that to cause heart palpitations. Especially someone who is somewhat gassy like I am. Prescribed me Omeprazole for GERD. She said she didnt want to rule anything out though. Also seems to think it could be stress/anxiety related. Anyways Im going back in a month to see if Im better or not. And if things get worse she said she'd send me to a cardiologist. I will say just hearing that my heart seems to be in good shape has made me feel a lot better. So could have partly been anxiety. After I felt the first couple was almost like a slippery slope getting worse and worse.

Glad to read you have seen your Dr. and things checked out well.  Anytime we have strange physical sensations that we feel may be threatening our health it is normal to feel a bit anxious.

You can rest assured that all is well with your heart at this time.

Kindly,
Kitt
