'Metabolic Syndrome'

We have so many 'syndromes' now a days, that at times

it can be pretty confusing!  Metabolic Syndrome isn't a disease, it's actually several problems that occur with

your metabolism and all at the same time...

You are overweight and have excess body fat mainly

around the waist; you also have high levels of fat, like high cholesterol, high triglycerides, or low levels of the 'good' cholesterol (HDL); high blood pressure; along with high amounts of sugar in your blood (resistance to insulin).

The more of these that you have - the greater health risks that you have.  The more apt you are to develop heart disease, stroke or diabetes.

So while we've heard of this syndrome before...here it is in black and white for you to actually look at and see - do you have it?

Hugs, Teri tongue

"Fit Heart Curbs Risk of 'Metabolic Syndrome"

""Our data suggest higher fitness levels provide protection against metabolic syndrome even in individuals with increased susceptibility because of existing metabolic risk factors," lead author Dr. Michael J. LaMonte, from The Cooper Institute in Dallas, said in a statement."

Well...first they say we have it, then they say, maybe not?!

Doubts Raised Over "Metabolic Syndrome"

The world's top two diabetes organizations are questioning the existence of "metabolic syndrome", a medical condition much in the news lately.

The American Diabetes Association and European Association for the Study of Diabetes said in a joint statement on Thursday that metabolic syndrome -- which has come to be seen as a predictor of cardiovascular disease and diabetes -- was poorly defined, inconsistently used and in need of further research. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_26537.html
