By now, we all know that eating the right foods can help us to be healthier and that's important especially when you have heart disease.

How many of you changed your diet when you found out that you had heart disease?! confused

Have you always eaten healthy, or like me, did you tend to eat foods that you wanted without too much guilt?

Are any of you on a special diet now?  Let us know what helps you and give us your thoughts!

Hugs, Teri tongue

I always ate pretty healthy and exercised regularly..When I was in the hospital after my heart attack all the doctors said I had none of the standard indicators..But after I got out even though my attack wasn`t caused by any of the normal problems with diet, cholesterol, etc I still became even more aware of what I ate so as to avoid any future problems..For example..I drivfor a living and before my attack I would stop at least once a week for a breakfast at McDonalds..Not an extreme amount by any measure..But since then I have maybe eaten breakfast there maybe 2-3 times in 16 months and then I would only eat half..Same with Taco Bell..I LOVE those big grilled stuffed burritos..I used to eat them at least once a week..2 at a time..Now I`ve eaten them maybe 4-5 times in 16 months and then just 1

I regret to say that I did excellently right after my heart attack, but have gradually gone back to eating poorly and not exercising. My cardiologist was not happy at all with me, other than some of my test results. Ackkkkk!

I'm not sure what helps me. I think the key is eating healthy along with exercise. I go tomorrow to see how much it will cost me to renew my membership to the gym in town. I have a few hours here and there between clients so I should be able to do that. I'm making a promise to you all that when I have an extra hour I'm going to do that.

I have changed my diet major Big time and I mean Major Big time
No fast food places
no pork at all
no white bread, rice, pasta  potatoes etc at all
NOthing with transfats in it
Limit my red meat to 4 times a month more fish and chicken
'use Canola oil or olive oil
nothing fried at all
lots more salads
grow my own herbs to cook with
Soy meat
soy milk
haerdley any canned foods unless low sodium or no sodium
dried beans instead of canned beans cooked in a pressure cooker.
2 eggs a week from uor chickens or maybe none
I make my own bread in the bread maker

also make my own  stock chicken, bef and vegtable in canning jars in refigerator. lower in sodium too.

Even thuogh I follow a good eating plan I still had to be put on a statin and ned to stay on it too so it all depends on how much damage we had and what the doctor told us for I cannot eat more than 800 miligrams of sodium a day some cannot eat any and some can eat more. But i tend to watch what I eat

You reminded me, Heidi, that actually I have made some changes, if not all the best ones. I only use olive oil now and if I use any margerine, it's made with olive oil. I still do not use much of that, either. I have decreased my sodium intake as far as seasoning my own cooking. I use Mrs. Dash's for that. I eat meatless meals at least a few times a week, and I mostly eat chicken rather than red meat.

Kathlyn, you may not need an extra hour a day for exercise. I can't find the article but here are (due to my pathetic memory) a few things I remember. It's about integrating excercise into your life....things like using the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, parking farther away in the parking lot.....that's it! that's all I remember...lol!
Can anyone think of any more?

I gave up all junk food and stay out of the interior aisles of the grocery store - nothing in a can or a box. No processed foods at all. No butter, only olive oil. I threw out the salt, and just use Mrs. Dash. I don't eat any red meat anymore at all; just chicken or fish (not farm raised - it's loaded with PVC) I do eat alot of fruit yogurt - and milk for calcium, also fresh fruits and vegetables, and unsalted nuts for protein snacks. I'm finding that bread has too much salt, so I plan to start baking my own bread before too long. I used to bake bread all the time, but I haven't done it in about 15 years. Because of the salt thing (and no diuretics) I really can't eat out anymore :-( except for salad. NO fun!

It's interesting - I was recently shopping for a hurricane and possible power outage. It's AMAZING to me that I can't buy any of the stuff I used to buy for that! I used to buy beef jerky, canned chilli, canned tuna, salted nuts, pretzels, chips - gadz, I don't know how I would survive! lol I'll have to re-think that whole shopping list.

I buy the "Low Sodium" Chunk White tuna and to me it`s better than the normal chunk white tuna...I spoke with my cardio about diet and he said I didn`t have to get crazy and never eat any junk food..Just don`t make it a habit..But he felt a burger or fries or burrito once a month or so wouldn`t hurt..To quote him.."When we give you those guidelines we expect you to cheat." tongue

I could do that up to a few months ago, but a/o this year, if I eat anything with salt, I can gain 2-3 lbs overnight and have very swollen ankles for several days which really BITES. So I guess I'll be the one who says I can't cheat.

That has been my problem as well, Oona - the fast food products (except for the fruit bowls) generally have oodles of salt!  But, Sara, I have had really good cholesterol reports and I, too, cheat ocassionally. yeah Just don't tell anyone...

I am like Oona and dear sweet Teri eat anything ut with a dab of salt in it up i go 2-5 lbs and ankles and feet swell up so i am highly salt senstive. each one has different heart disease and diferent types of medicine they take too so while salt might not afect some people people like Teri adn me with CHF and others too are extremly senstive to salt and puff up over night. But we all have changed ur eating ways keeps me reminnding of my old friend who died of Breast cancer  we are going to et right, stay fit and die anyway.

LOL, I about fell off my chair when I read that I was going to do an exra hour a day exercising. I meant if I had an extra hour that day I'd go to the gym and check out my membership. I need to reread what I write I guess. I doubt you'd find me spending an extra hour a day doing anything, but especially exercising!! I'd be laying on the floor, having fainted, haha. I went through cardiac rehab and was evaluated for a exercise program which I am supposed to be doing. They told me how to add increments in weights and reps to my regime.......which I DON"T DO! My bad though. I just want to set a goal of going 3x a week and doing the minimum and working back up to what I was doing.

Kathy an hour of exercise no not me but I do 15 min twice  a day on treadmill but also remember all the walking arund too get a pedometer and wear it 5,000 steps a day equal a mile   and then house work, yard work too my cardiac doctor told me some yard work is better than gym work but that is for some people
Yes Gloria Sturgill was always makeing people laugh she had different wigs, and differnt scarfs  so one week she might be a blone=de, then red head then scarf and oh her scarfs were so pretty and all silk. she told me everyone deserves a silk scarf ion their life time I have one with hearts one it and red dresses too.
