My co mod, Heidi and I were talking tonight about how salt and heart disease just don't make a happy

couple!   yeah

From high blood pressure to heart failure we all need to watch our salt intake.  We started talking about some of the foods that we have in our cupboards and as we talked we looked and compared a few things - and holy smoke!! can you imagine that we found out that if you buy Lite 50% less than regular Soy Sauce, you are still getting 575 mg. of sodium in every single Tablespoon that you use?!  One slice of 2% cheese has 300 mg. of sodium!  Even our 'healthy' veggies contain salt naturally!

So from there we started wondering how much more sodium we could find in our cupboards? and we thought we'd ask you...

How Much Sodium Is In Your Cupboard?!

nono Oh dear, lol! I'm CAUGHT, Jeeez, and I thought I was only having 400-500.
I just checked mine & here's what I came up with even though I have no salt in my house.
115/cup milk
170/bread, per slice
190/my fave jalapeno cheese per slice
160/cup yogurt
105/6 cookies

Soooo, what I will confess to eating of the above (lately, under stress) comes to 1515mg a day.
I would say most of the time when I'm not eating ALL of the above (in addition to other stuff, non processed, therefore no content label) that I'm around 800-1000mg/day, semi-wild guess.
Did you guys notice that they base the %/daily amount on skull 2400 mg/day? I thought that was supposed to have been lowered to 2000/da, but that's not what the labels say.

Here's a link to a great site that is very helpful in regards to low sodium eating. You can get lots of great products and some wonderful cookbooks to help you lower your salt intake. It is owned and operated by a guy named Pete, a heart patient who is awaiting a transplant. He has an inspiring story which you need to read. I have ordered various products from him in the past and have been very satisified with everything I have received. Anyway please check it out....

Julia :-)

Lets hope peper wilnot be bad for any of us.

BOb I can buy a botle of it and it lasts me longer than a year and have to throw it out I use it about every 3 or 4 months when I make a good shrimo dish withbrown rice. Just a dab of it about 1/4 teaspoon full or less.

Bob, curry and cumin are both spicey, curry actually has cumin in it! Though, I would suppose it probably depends on who makes it.

I'm not a big fan of either - just my taste buds :) but I love pepper!

Before my problems I used to eat those grilled stuffed burritos from Taco Bell 2 at a time..They have 2090 mg of sodium each!...I`ve found though that in all the "low sodium" things they replace the sodium with potassium and in excess that is bad for you also

You are right, Sara! Especially people that are on diuretics - you need to try and keep a happy balance between sodium and potassium.
Thanks! Hope you are doing well?!

I found another excellent link to Sodium and how much is recommended for us on a daily basis -- Check it Out! tongue

Diet - sodium (salt)

Recommendations:

Dietary sodium is measured in milligrams (mg). Table salt is 40% sodium; one teaspoon of table salt contains 2,300 mg of sodium.
