I thought this was interesting and important information. I did a search on healing well for swelling, and didn't see where a previous topic was started.

Are both of your feet swollen? If they are, you'll probably have to look a little higher for the causes. If you have too much fluid in your system, gravity pulls it to the lowest part of the body, where it collects. Subsequently, your feet and ankles will swell. People with high blood pressure frequently have this kind of swelling. If your heart is too weak to pump blood throughout your body, the liquid portion of the blood will leak out of the blood vessels and collect in your feet. People with congestive heart failure have this kind of swelling. If your kidneys do not function well and you lose protein in your urine, your may also experience swelling in your feet.

Another possible cause of foot swelling is inactivity. When you are normally active during the day, the muscles in your legs help move blood and fluids back to the heart so they can recirculate. If you are sitting in a car or riding on an airplane all day, your leg muscles will not be working as much and fluid will pool in your feet and legs. That's why it's a good idea to get up and walk around every hour or two on an airplane. If you're taking a long car trip, stop and walk around at a rest stop when you can.

I know that I HAVE to get more active again. It seems like this summer has all my energy going into my work, making it a go, worrying about finances, and going up to help my mom. I've noticed that sitting in the car all that way tends to make my midsection and feet swell some. this past weekend I was really really careful about my sodium intake though, and it seemed ot help some. You sound miserable, Heidi, with the swelling in the feet! Hugs.

Kathy, that was a great read - Thanks! tongue

I have abdominal swelling at times, along with legs on down...even hands.  But one thing you mentioned about the sitting in the car on the way to your Mom's?  Whenever I travel by car I swell up - yet when I sit in a chair at home, it's not as bad.  I've been trying to figure this out...I suppose cuz at home you can get up and move around more?, but I also think it's the way the seat (at least in my case) hits the back of the leg.  I'm short. tongue

I am in the car for about two and a half hours and I do get up when I'm in a chair at work or home. And at home if I'm in my chair, my feet are usually up in the recliner. So that could be!

I have had swollen ankles for what seems like years...except this year it has gotten progressivly worse...not only my ankles but my whole foot swells...i have somewhat normal ankles when i wake up ..but in an hour they are already swollen...and remain that way getting worse thru out the day -

no one has said why...finally yesterday I saw my new pcp...because i finally have insurance...i told him about the chest pains i have had...and as expected he said ..not much...that it did not sound to him like it was anything to do with my heart...YET my feet and ankles were swelling out of my skin!!

then he took my BP and said your BP is high...too high...i need to get you on BP meds...BUT...he still said nothing about my heart...but, then he wrote me an order for an EKG..which I had today...

sooo, will that really tell them anything ? I have heard mixed things about the EKG for women...does it really speak for us ?
as we speak i have some pain...he said its proberbly upper gi stuff and gave me prilosec otc....

any thoughts ....all i know is i hate the feet/ankle thing ...and I want answers already! I have waited so long !!!

thanks

Hi Marie! tongue

It is Not Normal for your feet and your ankles to swell -There is a reason for it.  Some chest pain and even arm pain may brought on by GERD - I've actually had it occur with myself - it can also mean angina and a possible Heart Attack!  So that said, if this happens to you, get to the ER - call 911 !!  No one knows for certain that this is the cause until they do further examination.

"EKG's assess your heart rhythm, diagnose poor blood flow to the heart muscle (ischemia), diagnose a heart attack, diagnose abnormalities of your heart, such asheart chamber enlargement, abnormal electrical conduction"

My suggestion to you is to ask him for an echocardiogram, and a stress test for starters, and perhaps a barium swallow to see if some of your problems could be from reflux or other upper GI problems.

I wish you well, Marie!!

Thanks Teri !
I only started the BP meds on Thursday and my BP is down and the swelling has decreased alot also...oh, my feet still ache but at least the swelling has gone down alot!

but, as I said he also put me on Protonix for upper gi "pain" since he does not think my pains are heart related...that would be great if only he is right...
except since taking that I am still having pains...they are not severe..but , they are enough for me to take "notice"( since taking the protonix i have not noticed any change) perhaps protonix takes a while to become effective? ...I know this, when the pains come I know it ! ...I just dont get it...

Docs office called me on Friday to say that the EKG came back normal...

well, i have taken your advice to heart...this is the beginning for me since finally getting insurance ..so, i am taking the steps to find the problems...

Thanks!
Marie

Good for you, Marie!! tongue

The thing is we all need to become our own patient advocates and become a real part of our health team!  When we start taking charge of our health and learning to eat right, getting plenty of exercise and ridding ourselves of bad habits like smoking, we've already joined the team! yeah

The next step is asking your Dr. why he feels you had the swelling to begin with...write yourself a list of questions.  Are you comfortable with this Dr.?  If you are - that's great! - if not try and find another, perhaps even for a 2nd opinion.

Best Wishes!!
Hugs, Teri tongue

I have had swollen feet and hands for years before having my heart attack. My PHP never did anything about it as far as blood pressure medicine, but I took prescrption diuretics for some time. I also wonder, and will try to research this, if my excessive weight would have something to do with it. I'm sure it would.

Well this is the 4th day on the bp meds..and my bp is so normal !
and the best part is that my ankles are NOT swollen ! I simply can not believe what they look like...
But, I am soooo upset at the thought that I went to see a doctor a few months ago re: the chest pains...and he saw my swollen ankles and saw my elevated bp...but didn't do anything !
and dumb me...i just didnt know ...
so, this pcp has one point already for re-acting to what he saw and moving quickly...
now, i need to narrow down why I am still feeling slight chest pains...arthritis? upper gi? or in my head ????

I found a site that talks a bit more about the swelling of feet, ankles and legs.  Hugs, Teri tongue http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003104.htm
