Hi

I'm just asking to see how safe double by pass surgery is. My dad who is 69 years old is going into the Hospital in the next 5 weeks to have this surgery done. Originally the doctors thought that he may only need a stent put in it, however after he had an angiogram done, they found that it was more complicated than that. My dad takes medication for diabetes as he has had it for a couple of years. Will he be okay after the surgery??

Hello, francesc. Welcome to HealingWell. I'm sure that preparations for this surgery take into account his diabetes and other medical conditions that he might have but I know this is worrisome for you in any case. I'm going to copy your post into the Diabetes Forum so there may be other responses for you.

Thank you Lanie. Any help would be great. I'm just really worried about what is going to happen to him.

My dad had a CABG x 5 three years ago, he's a type II diabetic. He did great. I think if you talk to your dad's surgeon, you'll find it's pretty common for type II diabetic patients to have bypass, and they see a lot.

It's typical after any heart surgery to get insulin, so you should expect that, even if he doesn't usually need it. I found that my dad ate marginally better after his surgery and he's since been able to come off meds, they were dropping him to low. With a diagnosed heart condition, you'll want to keep a close eye that his sugars don't start dipping to low, that's bad for the heart.

Best of luck!
