Hello, I am a newbie here. I had a PFO closure almost 2 years ago and it was a success. But, I've noticed that it's been harder (I've stopped and started back several times) to get back into an exercise regime where I don't feel winded. I used to bike and walk/jog up and down inclines before having the surgery and was doing really good with all of it. Don't remember feeling short of breath then.

Since my surgery, although I haven't been as consistent with my exercising, I can't seem to get back to or near that kind of level.

Anyone else experienced this?

Also, has anyone experienced random sensations of something squeezing or pressing on near the sternum area? Curious if this is related?

Hi Rlgc2002,

Welcome to HealingWell.

The most obvious question would be did you talk about this with your doctor?

How was it closed, how old are you? Do you regularly visit a doctor for exams to be sure the PFO closure OK?

Other things can cause shortness of breath, rhythm issues with your heart for example. Also, the squeezing or pressing near the sternum, is this under exertion or at rest?

In any case, you should discuss your concerns with your doctor, he/she can order a stress test, or a stress/echo test for further evaluation of your performance under exertion. I'd be careful about exercising until you're cleared by you're doctor, better safe than sorry.

Nevertheless, please fill in the details, I'd be interested in hearing more.
