Hi I am a 22 year old male, I was born with a perimembranous ventricular septal defect (hole in heart) and up until now I had believed it was closed but after a recent MRI I discovered it was still present and larger than I previously believed (1.1 cm) and also an aneurysm had formed that is connected to the septal tricuspid leaflet. I am going for consultation soon and while this recent diagnosis is worrying, I actually would want surgery to correct this because these complications apparently can be very serious later in life, I am also afraid I will be told to "wait and watch" because frankly thats what I have been hearing my entire life and this is where its gotten me. Has anyone had a similar experience? Do these complications warrant surgery? Thanks in advance for any advice

Sorry, I wish I could offer more words of wisdom, but I'm not super familiar with your condition.

My only advice would be that you still continue to see a pediatric cardiologist at an Adult Congenital Heart Clinic.

As some one that was also born with a heart defect, I too grew up with the watch and wait. I had my first open heart surgery at 37. I am so glad I was able to make it so long, but I understand the anxiety that comes along with living with all that in your mind.

Best of luck to you!
