WoW, this is a hard one for me! :)

I try to eat healthy and I love fruits, but I really don't always have a big appetite and so when I'm really hungry, I do cheat with the best of them! :)

How about you??

I am on a heart healthy/diabetic diet. I've lost a few pounds. I hope no one has found them!! And that includes me. I started exercising again, too. I hope to say at the end of next week that I was able to make it at least 3 times each week. I need to do lots better in all areas.

You Rock, Kathy!! You are doing great! Keep it up and let us know how you're doing - that's what I call an inspiration! When they decide what's going on with my back, I fully hope and intend to start a walking program again and going back to volunteer with the birds - I miss them! lol

Love and Hugs, Teri :)

Thanks for all your input here, I appreciate that! tongue The
only thing that I would add in here to all of this, is that
there are in some of us a heredity factor that seems to
prevent a complete turnaround with a lot of things - we
still need to take statins.  A healthy diet, exercise and
prescribed medications such as a Statin, goes a long way
in helping - though I think that your ideas could be very beneficial
and well worth looking into!!  Thanks for taking your time to
help out here and come on back anytime! yeah

Hugs, Teri tongue

and i'll add my 2-5 cents!
i have the combo problem of heart disease AND gastro problems.
my gastro doc says that what makes my gut feel good about eating is bad for my heart.
and conversely, the food that is good for my heart is no good for my gut!
that is, my gut hates the whole grains, fruits, and fresh vegees.
my heart loves them.
it's a big and real problem and i have lost tons of weight from eating nothing at all, as
healthy food makes my stomach hurt, but i'm afraid to eat non-healthy food!

Hi all,
Kinda depressed. Went to the doctor and my tri(what ever) are high, almost double.
So I now have even a tougher diet. No whites period! No sugar, no beer etc. (not a big drinker, but liked a beer once in a while), no fruit juice. I guess I'm at the " If it tastes good spit it out" stage.
Had to have 3 previous stents re-opened up and he added another one. So now it's 5 stents in 3 arteries. I'm going for the record. What is it anyway? Really though, where can I find good tasting things to eat, get full and still be on my diet? I'm getting pretty tired of salad and chicken I can tell you that! Eating out is even a bigger problem. No fried foods, no deep fried foods, no foods with batter on them, no salad dressing (except vinager & oil) no butter, no, no, no !!!! It gets pretty depressing. Any suggestions would be help. Especially Italian food or mexican food. No cheese, no pasta period, very little red meat, no sausage, no refried beans (lard) and the list goes on.
Thanks,
Vinny

Hi Vinny! tongue

You sound just like I did and sometimes still do! :)  I love Italian foods!!

To help lower those triglycerides one of the main things is to start eating more of a low fat, diabetic type diet.  Get rid of the sugar!  I use Splenda and I find that I really love it, plus, you can bake with it, too.  Now, it's an individual thing and I'm sure plenty more will come along and give you the pro's and con's of each of the different sugar substitutes, but in the end, it will be what you and your taste buds enjoy. tongue

Exercise and watching the transfats, along with only one alcoholic beverage per day will go a long way...

Here is a link to a few books that might interest you as well!

My cardiologist is of the opinion that while I should watch my diet and eat heart healthy foods it`s unrealistic to expect someone to stay 100% "non" with things and that to try and do so will just lead to frustration and failure...So what sort of little unhealthy "treats" or foods do some of you sneak in now and then?

hi vinny,
to satisfy that mexican food craving: go for whole-wheat tortillas, there are
several brands of no-fat refrieds out there, actually taco bells are really
good, grill a little chicken, if you can afford the cheese put a little sprinkle on.
i make my own tortilla chips with the tortillas, and eat salsa.
or i make quesadillas out of the things i listed above.
there are LOTS of ways to get around that low triglyceride regimen.
let me know if you'd like more tips!
it's time to learn to like whole-wheat flour, my friend (it took me some time, i can tell you) -

"To help lower those triglycerides one of the main things is to start eating more of a low fat"

Going on a low fat diet is not really the answer, infact if you went on a low fat diet triglycerides could actually rise. I recommend that a person watch what types of fats they consume. When people talk about restricting your intake of fat it misleads people to believing that all fat is bad, this isn't the case of course.

Consume Unsaturated Fats is fine, a good source of mono-unsaturated fat is Olive oil or Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  Also consume Omega 3 from Fish or Fish oil.

Avoid trans fats and saturated fat.

I have diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and thyroid problems. I still to a very strict diet and exercise. I've lost another 15 pounds. Unfortunately, i gained five back since school is out. I am enrolled in a community college full time. I think a lot of my health problems are med induced. My bp meds caused they thyroid and cholesterol problem. Heredity caused the diabetes problem.

I have eaten the same type of breakfast for the last five yrs. High fiber cereal, fat free milk, no fruit i hate it. I love veggies so i eat a lot of them. I drink at least two cups of green tea and very little meat. If i eat meat, it has to be fish or poultry. My gp said i have been doing very very good. My bp went from 200+/100 down to 130/80..my cholesterol dropped from 337 to 243 and my glucose a1c is under 6.. My diet is very strict, but it has allowed me to conquer my diseases and return to school.

Wow, it sounds like you are doing all the right things jtu!  That's great that you not only lost weight but also brought your bp down!  Keep up the good work and don't be hard on yourself for gaining a few pounds.  I bet you take them right back off now that the holidays are over!

I'm not too familiar with the cholesteral readings whoa, but it looks like yours are very good right?
