I have heart disease (atherosclerosis, bypass surgery), and I’m wondering if I can reduce or eliminate my blood pressure meds (I take 100mg Toprol per day, and 5mg Altace). Because of a vegan diet I'm on now, my numbers have been getting low, although I don’t experience lightheadedness or anything. Thing is, I’m trying to run on a track a few times a week and I believe the Toprol is preventing my heart from beating fast enough to allow me to run for a while. My cardiologist would like me to stay on Toprol for “secondary prevention”, but I think I should be able to wean off it now that my BP is dropping because of the CHIP diet. What should I do? Thanks.

you should listen to your cardiologist. I would make sure ya kidneys are in good health, as they control blood pressure. take care, and welcome.

HT is absolutely right you need to listen to your dr on this. Recently 2 of my 3 BP meds were doubled. I asked the dr if after a month or so if the BP stays where it should could we go back to the original dose & he said no. You have a cardiac history don't bring on something else you don't need.

Take care.

The meds may keep your heart rate from hitting what's defined as a "peak heart rate" however, this shouldn't prevent you from increasing distance or stamina. It just changes your personal heart rate zones.
