So Dr started me on the toprol xl 25mg but I only take half. I already feel the effects and I feel like a space cadet. I'm not happy with my recent DX of lone afib but I guess I should be since I only have been getting every two years and dud t know what it was now I know. I'm just so nervous and worried anymore I just want my life back.

Give it some time and see if you don't feel better. If not then call your doctor. It took me awhile to get use to my beta blocker but I'm much better with it now than without. It's a long story but it helps with my anxiety.

I've been on Metroprolol for a number of years, took some getting used to, i also started at 25 mg. I'm taking 25 mg 2 x a day now and no issues. Be patient, stick with it for a while, if you dont adjust, talk to the Dr about an alternative.

I skipped one dose of Toprol XL yesterday I take 25 mg but split 12.5 and half the doctor said to see how I feel so maybe it is my anxiety playing a part in it because I still felt the same way but no stomach cramps and I've had three days of diarrhea. And I had some extra skipped beats last night and this morning which I wasn't too happy about because it cost me anxiety cause I don't want to go into a fib or scared when the next episode will be even know so far it's only happened every two years thank God we finally caught it. So I think I'm going to take it today at 6 PM and see if I feel better taking at night with the dizziness and fatigue instead of taking it during the day because I was taking it during the day at 10:30 in the morning don't ask me why I picked that time LOL but now I'm going to try tonight at six and see how that plays out I'm only taking 12.5 Dr. said it shouldn't affect me but everybody's body is different and it does .

PK, check with your pharmacist about the stomach cramps & diarrhea to see if in fact this is a potential side effect. Like some of the other posters I have been on this medication for years with no problem.

Take care.

I'm on a low dose of Bystolic, a beta blocker, and I am seeing some pretty low heart rates. Often in conjunction with PVCs. I get down to Usain Bolt levels (32 bpm). I bounce back up into the low 50's though. I'm taking 2.5 mg once daily.
Also, when I exercise I sometimes monitor my heart rate. Several months ago it would have been normal for me to get up to around 130 while cycling and when pushing it, get up to my max, in the low 170's. But now 110 feels like 130 and 130 is hard to reach.

When I went to see the cardiologist the last time, I was not taking anything and my resting heart rate was trending down (into the low 50's) without any increase in physical activity or fitness. My diastolic BP was also getting much lower than I had ever seen, into the 40's.
I suspect I've got more going on than the cardio has identified so far, which is moderate mitral valve regurgitation.
As a side note, up until a few years ago, I actually had high blood pressure and was on meds for it.

When the doctor put me on Bystolic, he did say he wanted to go with as low a dose as possible, to keep my heart rate from getting too low.

Thanks guys, so I restarted on Friday I started to take at 6pm to see if I felt any better now I don't like taking at night because it drops my heart rate down in the 50's so I'm gonna see if I can take it durning the day again early in the morning. See how that goes.

I've been taking metoprolol for about 6 years now, ever since open heart/valve surgery. I started out at 125 mg/day. I was totally wiped out, but blamed it on the surgical recovery. . . until I started rehab. I felt like I was pulling around a sled full of boulders all day. I negotiated with my cardio and we reduced my dosage down to 50 mg/day. Major improvement, stayed there for another 6 months as I recovered. Finally, at 12 months out from surgery (valve, bypass, pacemaker), I again negotiated a reduction to 25 mg/day, and am there now. I, too, used to push it at the gym, getting my heart rate up to the 160's easily. Today, with the beta blocker, 140 is the max, and that is a LOT of work.

My resting heart rate used to go down to the 40's, before surgery. Now, the pacemaker won't let me go below 60 bpm. Life is still good. No (clinically significant) afib since just after surgery. Life is good.
