Need Information on heart rhythm

My daughter has been having symptoms that have been getting worse. For over 2 years she was thought to be having asthma, which she may have. These started as having a cough in the evenings. Than went to having trouble running, and than walking fast. But, never with wheezing.Not sure if there were other symptoms.

Now she has other symptoms that are different. She has had severe chest pains, weakness, feeling dizzy, racing heart and had to leave work. This lasted about an hour. Even after she had her inhaler it continued but than went away about 1/2 hour later after going to the ER. Where they didn't do any testing and just sent her home telling us it was an acute asthma attack. Her oxygen level was normal. She had no symptoms prior to the attack and just was taking food out to a customer. She has since had numerous attacks. Even just laying down singing to herself. She gets sweaty, has trouble talking, fatigue, dizziness, trouble standing, and racing heart.

She had a heart monitor that her doctor still has to look at. Another doctor briefly looked at is and said he didn't think it was arrhythmia, but she had episodes where her heart raced too fast or too slow. We are now asking for an ultrasound to be done.

What types of conditions could cause these types of problems or fast/slow heart beats.

Hello & welcome to Healing Well. How old is your daughter? I am not really understanding the comment of "for over 2 years she was thought to be having asthma". Has she been evaluated by a pulmonary dr?

ER is not going to do diagnose a person & run a battery of tests unless the patient is in some type of medical crisis that an admission is warranted. What type of dr ordered the heart monitor? Sorry for so many questions, just trying to get an idea of things.

I understand as her mom you are very concerned & want to help her. While the internet is a wonderful place to learn about things, when it comes to trying to find out what type of medical conditions a person may possibly have, my usual reply is Dr. Google is never right. If you start plugging in her symptoms you will be chasing that rabbit down every hole imaginable. The main problem is too many conditions & symptoms overlap each other & you end up stressed to the max & think omg, she may have this horrible condition. I could sit here & list quickly 50 potential problems, but the bottom line is none of them will be her problem. Save yourself a lot of unnecessary stress, leave this to the experts not non-medical people.

I say see what the dr has to say about the her test. If I am understanding you correctly, she probably had a 24 hour Holt monitor which is where they usually start. Depending on the results of that will determine the next step. It is an excellent test because it monitors the heart & will show any episodes in a 24 hour period. You can ask for tests, not sure why you think at this point an ultrasound would be of any help. If you do not agree with what her dr says about the test results, you can always ask for a referral to a cardiologist. Let him/her look at the testing & make a determination from there.

My daughter is 18, and has high functioning autism. We were very concerned when she had the acute attack at work that led to severe chest pains, trouble walking, dizziness, and she said she thought she was going to die from the pain she was having. This happened with no warning or other symptoms. She has had recent episodes, but without the chest pain. Instead she said her chest feels tight and she sweats, feels weak, has trouble talking, and said her was going very fast. She asked if I could hear it. She had that last one just laying on her bed, with no warning.

There is much we don't know and hope to find out soon. I was curious to know if there were any arrhythmia type of conditions that showed both faster and slower beats than normal. From what we have currently heard she has both these abnormalities.

If these are truly the problem they should show up on the Holt monitor she had done. Does your daughter by chance have any anxiety issues? What type of specialist order the Holt monitor?

I would wait to see what the results of the heart monitoring and follow-up with the possible anxiety symptoms. Sometimes, even though you think your heart is racing, your bpm could be normal. I would also make an appointment with a gastro doctor because GERD sometimes mimics heart issues. Since you don't know that she has arrhythmia, and whether her faster and slower heartbeats are actually abnormalities, I wouldn't get ahead of yourself. I agree with Susie, please don't try and diagnose through Dr. Google.

We have gotten the test results back. Her family physician ordered the tests.

The results showed that she had periods of bradycardia and tachycardia.

At the lowest it is 46 and the highest 152. The base line is 78. Here is some information the record.

The patient rhythm included 6 hr 59 min 33 sec of bradycardia. Slowest at 3 am Day 2, lasting 3 min 35 sec. The patient's rhythm included 7 hr 31 min 58 sec of tachycardia. Fastest at 9 pm Day 1.

Supraventicular ectopic activity consisting of 14 beats of which 14 were late beats. Longest R-R interval was 1.5 seconds occurring 6 am Day 1. The longest N-N interval was 1.5 seconds occurring at 6 am Day 1.

She has one event during the monitoring but it didn't show any difference on the monitoring. Is it abnormal to have long periods of time having either slow heart beat or fast heart beat? We see the family doctor who ordered the test on Monday. Is there any questions that would be good to ask? Or, other tests.

Are you near a children's hospital? In your shoes, I would want a referral to a pediatric cardiologist, preferably at a children's hospital as they are multidisciplinary and can do more investigation.

The doctor here wants to treat her with anxiety disorder medication. Which she could very well have. But, some of the attacks would not be related to anxiety that we could see. We did not discuss the periods of slow or fast heart beats.

Many of the brady events happened during the daytime and night only during her sleeping.

You must get a second opinion from another cardiologist and/or electrophysiologist. It took me many years and doctors and going to the very top specialists to get to the bottom of my heart issues, which sound a lot like your daughter's and mine were not anxiety related but caused by a type of SVT. I was told the type I have is not fatal but I take medication to control the symptoms
