The largest study ever to ask whether a low-fat diet reduces the risk of getting cancer or heart disease has found that the diet has no effect. You can go to the NY Times to read the entire story.

ThThe $415 million federal study involved almost 49,000 women between the ages of 50 to 79 who were followed for eight years. Those women assigned to a low-fat diet had the same rates of breast cancer, colon cancer, heart attacks and strokes as those who ate whatever they wanted.

Some researchers are saying this is the final word. It's a very important study to read. It's a few pages long, so I really shortened it here.

They did recommend the following: "Given the lack of benefit found in the study, many medical researchers said that the best dietary advice, for now, was to follow federal guidelines for healthy eating, with less saturated and trans fats, more grains, and more fruits and vegetables." Not everyone was convinced, either, like Dr. Dean Ornish and others.

Thank you Elisha. What did you think about it all? I am still digesting it. It seems like they are saying to take things in moderation at this time. I'm not going off my lower fat diet. I think it's the only way I can lose weight, or at leats in my experience.

Hi Kathlyn,  I try to eat a low fat diet now and have for many years.  I also added in a low carb combination to this about a year and a half and have dropped a few pounds.  I think that the carb's was what worked the best for me at least.  Going from white bread to wheat, backing off the potatos and not stopping at McDonalds everyday at lunch, LOL!  However, I do agree with the moderation part.

Thanks, El! I've had different responses about that article. Some people think it's still hype I guess that it doesn't mean anything, others said they knew that all along that it wasn't fat causing heart dis. and diabetes and others still think to do things in moderation. I think that works best for me too, moderation that is!!

I never thought it was as simple as lowering fat intake... choosing the right fats are more important!

But something that would be benificial to almost everyone is lowering calorie intake by 10-20%. Then we would see huge reductions in all cancers, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and neurodegenerative diseases and more!

Hi everybody, lower fat & lower cholesteral will prevent clogging of the arteries & reduce the risk of stroke. if you research it you'll find that is fact too. Take care & if you are on low fat now please check with Dr. or dietician before doing so. God Bless.

The one problem I have with this study is a to determine cancer development, 8 years is a short time. We talk of cancer risks with many years of exposure. Why would prevention be less years? I still think the data is best for low fat diets, and that is what I still recommend to my patients. A cxomplex carbohydrate heavy diet--not simple carbs.

Hi... No I practise calorie restriction, at first glance it might seem that my low numbers could be caused by some disease, but I have no diseases or anything that caused these low numbers. CR is the only known way to retard bioligical aging in all animal, you restrict calories by 30% it makes the animal live 30% longer and so on...

I got these numbers by eat healthy and restricting my calories to 1800k/cal a day. Calorie Restriction is universal in its benifits as I mentioned earlier on. I got very little response when I shared this with this section of the forum, probably because CR would be difficult to do, especially for life. CR has a rejunvenating effect on the heart and it prevents primary aging not just secondary.

Please take a look at this very recent study, our members at CR Society took part in this study.

http://record.wustl.edu/news/page/normal/6447.html

"This decline in diastolic function is a marker of primary aging," Fontana said. "Diastolic function declines in most people as they get older, but in this study we found that diastolic function in calorie-restricted people resembled diastolic function in individuals about 15 years younger."

"People in the study averaged only six years on the diet, but their hearts looked 15 years younger. So Fontana said it's possible that the diet has a rejuvenating effect."

You can read the rest at the link I gave you.

A very high majority of us that do calorie restriction have very good health markers, changes happen farily quickly... If you are interested I can share some links with you to Videos or articles on it.

We have had people with high cholesterol numbers like that on the cr society and by restricting calories upto 20-30% they got their cholesterol levels lower than even what medication could do, which some people were on for many years.

Here is an interview with david stern, he has been doing CR because of heart disease,

This video requires Real Player! ( if you aint got it you can get it free here; http://www.real.com/ )

It's worth thinking about just monitoring your calorie intake and try reducing it, I can't promise that you will see the same benifits but i'm sure that there can be some improvement! It is very important to track nutrients though to ensure that you meet RDA of everything. Please post back on your results.
