Hey all,

Well i thought i was doing great, actually had been, my blood pressure had been running about 118/70 to 120/72 on the bp meds im on. I take benicar. My doc put me on lexapro for anxiety/depression three weeks ago and my blood pressure was good then. I go in this morning for a follow up on my blood pressure and it was 178/95!!! She took it twice, one on each arm.  Then when the doctor came in he took it, it had gone down a little but, it  was still 175/90.  The only thing different i did was yesterday was my last blood pressure pill, so i hadnt take one when i went to doc this morning. Could my blood pressure have gone up that fast???? It really scared me cause ive been  doing very well, except i had lost lots of weight on zoloft. I was down to  9 7pds.  Im now back up to 101. that made me happy, but th e blood pressure sure as heck didnt. If anyone can help,, i would  really appreciate it!! This is just so freaky to me. I had a major stress situation over the weekend but would that have done it??? geez im sorry, im going on and on ... Take CAre Peppertree   :)

Hi Peppertree:
My blood pressure goes up when I go to the doctor. I think they call it white coat syndrome. Stress will also cause your blood pressure to go up. I wouldn't think missing one pill would make that big of a difference, especially if you have been taking them for awhile. They would be in your system still I would think.

hey,

thanks for your replies. Well, he didnt seem really worried cause i saw him three weeks ago and it was good and i saw him in   October last year and it was really good.  No i havent been checking it at  all last few months,, but he told me to check it daily for a week, if it was still high like that he would change my meds. So i guess we will see.. Thanks for your responses. And i dont think i had white coat syndrome at all and if i did dont think it would make it go up that high, do you? thanks peppertree

:-)  i agree i do not think it was whitecoat either, these doctors are not THAT intimidating.  well keep an eye on it, it could be caused by one of your other meds for sure, i wenat on zoloft and my bp went up by 10 points, and that was a low dose. now that i said that i will go check my numbers again as i just raised my zoloft to 50 mg. let us know how you do. bye for now.

Hi peppertree,  Your blood pressure seems awfully high to be "white coat syndrome"  I would also suggest investing in a home blood pressure monitor that you can get a walmart or your local pharmacy for around 50.00 or so and checking your blood pressure at home.  Here is a link on doing your own blood pressures.  http://familydoctor.org/128.xml

If you get a blood pressure monitor kit, I suggest you get an automatic one. That way you can take your own blood pressure. I bought one three weeks ago after I had a reading of around 200 over 100 at the doctor's office. I have been taking it every day and the systolic (top number) varies but the diastolic (bottom number) is always over 90, and has gone up as high as 117. I wake up every morning with a headache and think this is due to high bp. I don' t want to go on medication though, I already take enough medication (zoloft, risperdal,) and am going to eliminate salt and carbonated beverages from my diet and lose weight. I hope this will lolve the problem.

A one-time reading doesn't matter. Doctors usually take several readings b4 prescribing or upping a bp med. I suffer with very high bp and therefore, I have to monitor at home. I would keep and eye on the bp by monitoring it at home. If it doesn't go down, then your dr. will probably prescribe meds.

Hey,

Thank you all so much for your replies.Yes i have a digital blood pressure moniter at home and have been taking my blood pressure daily. Today its running  128/73 . Im getting used to taking it again  daily, i was  really anxious the first few times, always am if i have to take it. Ive also started walking again, which i had gotten lax in, so maybe  that will  help, but im wri ting all my numbers down so when i  call , he will know what they are if he needs to change my bp meds. i see a blood pressure cuff, and immediately get anxious.  After seeing the doctor at 9:30am that morning, i went and picked up my blood  pressure meds and took one immediately, by 3:00 it was down to 148/78, and has been going down since. I know blood pressures vary through out the day, but really dont know what caused it, unless it was the lexapro he put me on 3weeks ago for depression. Thanks for all your help, really i appreciate it. Peppertree:)
