     Hi all,
I am new to this forum and am enjoying what I am learning from you all. My history goes back only 9 days, when I had my aortic valve replaced ,so all of this "heart healthy" stuff is rather new to me. I am 54yr. old,an RN,and worked right up to the day prior to diagnosis, when I began having shortness of breath and palpitations. I walked my daily 3 miles with my daughter, then called my doctor to be checked out, expecting a minor problem. To my surprise, the dr. office transported me by ambulance to the hospital where a stress echo. showed that I was in severe CHF with an almost non-functional aortic valve. It was replaced that evening as it was an emergency situation, and I'm very grateful to be alive. I'm doing very well, with minimal discomfort, and my incicion is well healed. Just wondering if anyone out there had a similar situation and we could compare notes.

Hi mcfalls,  Welcome to Healing Well forum.  We are happy to have you.  My mom has to have 4 of her valves replaced and is at the cardiologists office right now getting an Echo done and scheduling her cath before they decide when her surgery will be done.  I are terrified of when this will take place.  My mom is the center of my life and would die is I lost her.  It does me so much good to hear of success stories to valve replacements.  Did you opt to have mechanical valves or tissue one?  She is going for mechanical ones I think even though she will have to be on blood thinners for the rest of her life.  She also has CHF and Mitro Valve Prolapse.  This was mostly brought on by her taking the drug Fen-Fen.  Anyhow, I am sure that other members will reply to your post and please do feel free to use healing well as a resource for anything you need.  We are always here.  Take care

Hi Elisha,

Sorry about yout mom's valve problems. I had a biological(cow) valve replacement because I didn't want to do the Coumadin for the rest of my life. How old is your mom? I know my valve might need replacing somewhere down the road, but, hopefully by that time, there will be better ways of doing it. There's research being done now on replacing valves by catheterization. I am amazed at how well I am feeling and how little pain I have from the incision. My best wishes to your mom.

Thank you so much mcfalls,  My mom is 51 way too young to have this going on in opinion.  Yesterday she saw her cardiologist and had an Echo and he scheduled a Cath for next week to measure the valves I guess?  They do both sides in this type of cath.  Then she goes to St. Louis to consult with the heart surgeon.  She is getting both the Mitral Valve and Aortic replaced even though she needs to have all four replaced.  She was wanting to put it off but her cardiologist told her yesterday that her 2 valves are only functioning at about 20% and it needs to be done now.  She has been putting it off due to my health problems and I am sure she is scared of what may happen.  I am glad that your surgery has turned out well it is good to hear of success stories instead of negative all the time.  I really needed that right now.  :-)
