Hello everyone. I am curious as to what test is used to check the brains vascular system. Would it be a brain mri?  Lets say we want a work up on our brain vascular system....what test????

Hi Neurogurl

Hopped over from migraines, and was researching some of the posts with what I am going through right now. I saw your post and thought I'd respond! It's a Brain MRA, it looks at the blood vessel system. They can also do a CTA, which is done by the CT Scan machine, but that machine uses radiation to take pictures...

I've done both in the past.

Take care..

I take it you are pregnant--so first I will say Congratulations!!!! I know that the Cat Scan one probably wouldn't be safe because that uses radiation from my understanding. When I have had MRI/MRA's done they have always asked me if there is any possibility if I may be pregnant, and I haven't been at the time. However, during one of my pregnancies I was urged to get an MRI due to symptoms and it was during my 7th month my by OB/GYNE. At the time, I elected not to get it, the symptoms were minimal and I had pre-eclampsia at the time, which could have explained the symptoms too.

Unfortunately, I just don't know...It is probably a question to ask your doctors, I think sometimes some tests/exposure to certain things is more dangerous during certain months of your pregnancy and I am just not sure of those any more (I haven't been pregnant for a few years, and my memory has slipped a little)...

The MRA proved to be an important test for me...Looking back I wish I had a doctor who would have ordered it months ago!

Exciting time in life--YEAH!! Do you mind if I ask what else is going on? I stick to migraines...According to my OB/Gyne-no, but all docs are different in their opinions and everyone is different. That is somewhat similiar to what I had, but it stayed to my hand and my face during my pregnancy. What medications do you take, some meds can cause it too...

I've had numbness and tingling, but only on my right side several times-very weird feeling, so I know what you are feeling!

Take care

sure not at all...Im thinking when your asking what else going on as in my symptoms. If I'm wrong let me know! Ok well, I have wierd visual problems. All started about a year ago. I see thousands of fast moving sparkles, and I see trails of lights, and images. Some trails are ghostly white, while others are colored. For example, if i look at a red light while in my car, and move my eyes up and down I get a red trail. I get these feelings sometimes like im sinking or tilting. Then since I got pregnant now the tingling in the hands and feet started. I've had numerous tests, all normal. As far as the brain anyways. A couple of doctors said migraine, but only sometimes I get headaches and the vision problems are all day long everyday. Seems to be getting worse. Migraines are supposed to be episodic. So now Im thinking vascular. Thats why i asked about the brain vascular system. What do you think

I'm sorry it took me awhile to get back & I am so very sorry for your loss, I saw your other post. I know this is a very hard time for you! Please hang in there and keep trying to find answers, I know it is hard, give yourself some time to heal from what just happened and seek support from others, you need it--it is a hard time to go through...

I'll be honest I'm just not sure. I have similiar situation going...Mine is that I have weakness (stroke like symptoms), and they are relating this to a migraine variant--sounds like what you have been told just a different type of condition that you have that involves other things--there are actual conditions out there. I do go to a very large headache clinic, and there is a good amount of information on the internet about variants of migraines that cause these issues. I have been told that the effects of migraines can last for long periods of times, I have needed rehab to resolve my symptoms in the past and it has taken months. However, I had recent testing that showed other issues so back to docs...

I just don't know! Migraines are a tough one, yes they can definently do all kinds of stuff (they can come with no headache), but I'm not sure--it would be something to find an expert in headache conditions. Also, once you feel better I would maybe start again with your doctors and see if you have any other testing they feel you may need-like the MRA (you can always get another opinion), but give yourself time to heal!!!
