Hi everyone,

I found this site and thought I'd post here cos I'm really worried :S

I'm a 19 year old girl (nearly 20) and since I was about 15 I've had the odd episode of a racing heartbeat, which is usually triggered by intense exercise (particularly jumping around for a long period of time). It doesnt happen very often, probably less than 10 times in the past 5 years. However more recently it has happened more often, and can occur just if I like bend over to pick something up for example. The other night it happened after I got back to my room (I'm a student) and my heart was racing so fast, and so hard, I could feel it practically popping out of my chest. I was terrified, it seemed like it was running away and would never slow down. I was so scared I phoned my friend and she came over, but by the time she got to my room it had slowed down a bit, and she stayed until it went back to normal. Overall the whole thing was only happening for 10- 15 minutes, but it was awful!

I have also been getting slight chest pains very recently, on my left side. However I can't tell whether they're originating from my heart, chest muscles, or left breast. I really don't know. I think they're too far over to be my heart, but my knowledge of anatomy is rubbish, so I dont really know. It could also be amplified by the fact I'm worrying about it, but things just don't feel normal! Its not unbearable pain, more like discomfort really, and it doesnt get any worse, just stays the same.

I went to see the doctor yesterday about the racing heart problem, and she prescribed me beta blockers, but said to only use them when I needed to (i.e. if the problem happens again). She also is going to get me an ECG at the hospital but that will be a few weeks away. So until then, does anyone know what could be wrong with me?? Do I have a lot to be worried about??

Thank you for reading this :-)

Hey Itzcat...I have the same problem, don't worry too much. Anxiety and stress definately can make it worse. Have you had an ekg. This sounds like tachycardia (abnormal heart rate.) I am taking Atenolol to control it which is a beta blocker. It seems to help.
