Hi,
I'm a 40 yr old female with history of hbp.  Last summer I started having chest and abdominal pain.  A few trips to ER with EKG every time...results always normal.  September 06 went to the ER with shortness of breath, chest , shoulder pain.  EKG normal but diagnosed with gallstones and inflammed GB.  Surgery to take out GB and I figured all would be well again.

In November during routine physical I had another EKG done.  Results were "abnormal"  My GP refered me to a cardiologist who did an exercise stress test and echo (January 07).  The stress test was normal and I had to wait over two months to see her again for results of the echo!!(I live in one of the most critically underserviced cities in canada for healthcare).

I saw the cardiologist yesterday and she did another EKG which was also abnormal.  She said my echo showed some thickening of the walls of my heart (she wasn't more specific and I now regret not asking more questions).

She told me my last 3 EKG's (anything after Sept 06) are abnormal when at rest BUT.......my EKG during exercise righted itself and looked totally normal????

She says sometimes females get a false reading on EKG's and ordered a nuclear stress test to check again.

Has anyone heard of anything like this???  Does it make any sense that 6 months ago I would get a perfectly normal result and now keep getting what I'm hoping are false results.  Or am I setting myself up for a huge shock when I find out that the abnormal results are correct?

Thanks for listening.

Hi jm, welcome to healing well forum.  I am sorry your going through this eyes .  Actually, yes I have heard of this as the exercise stress tests on females can be incorrect due to breast tissue....for whatever reason I dont know?  A nuclear stress test is going to be your best bet and your least invasive procedure at this point to figure out what is going on with your heart.  Please do keep us updated on how things go.  Take care

Let me guess- you're in Montreal? That where I am, and my girlfreind here has to literally hound her Cardiologist's secretary just to get him to call back to adjust her meds. The Cardiologists are just swamped and overworked. Anyway, I hope you do find out that they were false positives, but try to keep an open mind.

Thanks for the replies. No, not Montreal...Cambridge Ontario. You guys have a huge backlog for specialists too? Sucks, doesn't it?!

Two days now until my test and hopefully all goes well and I get the results quicker this time.

Try living in Saskatchewan. Health care here is horrible.

I guess there aren't many places in Canada to get really top notch health care. We just don't have the choices in this country do we? I live near Toronto and Hamilton Ontario which both have top notch hospitals and doctors but we aren't really allowed to shop around for a good doctor or get a second opinion.

Anyways enough of the complaining...my test was yesterday and went well I think. They said there would be no side effects of the radioactive stuff but after I got home I felt horrible all day...achy and sick to my stomach and was awake most of the night feeling sick. I'm starting to feel a bit better today and now have to wait 3 weeks to get my results.
