My father is having a stent placed in his carotid artery this afternoon. He is 78. A two time cancer survivor with a larnyjectomy (SPELLING ?)-his voice box was removed due to surgery from the last bout of cancer. He had a stroke last week. Tests showed that his carotid artery is somewhere between the high 80's to 99% blocked. He is high risk but this surgery has a high success rate and is less dangerous than the old method with a faster recovery time.

I thought that I was handling things OK but I've been impatient and irritable with my family the last couple of days and tired all the time-more like worn out/weary....well, you get the idea. I think I'm having mild panic attacks and today I find myself avoiding getting ready.

In addition, last week, an hour after I found out my dad had been taken to the hospital, my daughter had a fall from her horse during one of her jumping rounds at the competition. The *&^% EMT at the show comes rushing out and keeps telling me she felt significant swelling and a deformity at the hip. My daughter was wanting to get up but they kept yelling at her to lay still. They scared her to death and MYSELF!!!! She is only 11. They called an ambulance to transport her to the hospital. The put her in a neck collar and strapped her onto a back board even though she had not fallen on or hit her head. It was her hip! They strapped her down with these BRIGHT ORANGE straps and one guy was wanting to call the helicopter rescue guys!!!!!!! EVeryone is oogling like at a train wreck. It was HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!

We get to the hospital. The doctor comes in and starts unwrapping and unstrapping her, asks, "Does it hurt here? How about here? Can you get up? Do you feel dizzy? Can you bend down, walk, crouch, jump? Any pain?.....OK, she's fine. We need to do a urine culture to make sure the kidneys aren't damaged and she can go back to the show." WHAT THE H%^#! is wrong with that EMT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO significant swelling or deformity- NOT EVEN A BRUISE!!!!! WHERE did she get her anatomy training?!?!?!? Now I'm having nightmares about the entire scene! It was HORRIBLE!!!!! I'm so mad at that EMT. Talk about trauma and it's ALL MINE! My daughter is fine! She was back riding the next day, completely unaffected. I'm in panic mode! I just can't deal with things these days! I'm having a really hard time handing everything that is going on and I think I'm having these panic attacks which are making everything even worse!

I know there is no question here and I know that none of you can do anything about any of it. I guess I just need to rant.? I've got to get ready and go to the hospital for my dad!!!

Sorry about your problem with the EMT
Any one that falls over 3 feet gets a C-COLLAR and BACK BOARD.
Do not blame the EMT this is required by county, state and federal protocols.
Any EMT that does not follow protocols can get in more trouble then having a angry parent for not following protocol.

UUHHMMMM..........And how do you explain the young lady repeating about 10 times that there was significant swelling and a deformity at the hip?   Let me remember....oh yeah, there was NO swelling, NO deformity and NO bruise. ??? Oh yeah and I'm the one stuck with about a $400 ambulance ride! skull   Nice!!!!!!!!

Sorry about the problems, but you can understand why the EMT'S have to make sure.  I am just pleased your daughter wasn't hurt worse....since my daughters and grands ride.   A couple of weeks ago, I had to make a ER trip myself and the young men did the best they could with me not having blood vessels that actually work...yes, it's even more scary having to ride the ambulance....blood pressure is off the charts for someone like me.   Also understand the panic attacks...why wouldn't you be having more right now?   The complex nature of the things baffle you when you are 20 or 60.  While getting wired and trying to find a vein that worked...my words were.......I can promise you I am not having an panic attack...just really stressed and hurting.  If I saw my family hit the ground and the EMT's weren't doing what they are trained to do.....likely I would assume they weren't doing their job.  Sure hope those problems are easier by now.  Always good to come here when your stressed anyway.   The miner has educated me even more with the back board situation.  Hugs, Annie

:-)  hi hopes, i haven't been here for a bit, so glad everthing worked out for the best. sounds like the expense of using emt was part of the problem, it would be nice if we could dictate the way we are billed,  sorry it was such an ordeal,  you must be one of those people that dreads drawing attention in your direction.  i think there were definitely several emotions being tapped into.  hope you are doing a lot better now? it is amazing how much the human body can handle, i am amazed your dad was able to get through all this. i wonder if i would have the will to go on.  such a baby.  nice to see you again.  xoxoxo

Hi everyone! I have gone back to my counselor and am practicing the biofeedback thing again. I'm definately having symptoms but I know that with time and practice I can get things calmed down again.

Dreamgirl, You are SO RIGHT. I hate attention! My husband and I got married in Jamaica at one of those all-inclusive resorts because I couldn't stand the thought of walking down the aisle with all those eyes on me! LOL......I'm serious. It was a wedding and honeymoon all rolled into one. It was nice!
