I usually hang out in the UC forum, but I have a relative in the hospital. I'm getting
information second hand, so I don't really understand what's going on. Maybe someone
can help me understand?

My grandfather is 89 years old, and he went in to the hospital about a month
ago to have a colon tumor removed. He hasn't been doing well since then.
He's on a liquid diet, and hasn't had any bowel movements.

On Saturday, his heart stopped for five minutes, and on the third try with the
defibrilator the doctors got it started again. They did some tests, and it wasn't a heart attack,
it wasn't a blood clot in the lung, and it wasn't because his blood is too thick.

I'm getting all this second hand information from my relatives, so I don't really
understand what's going on. I feel like if I knew more, I wouldn't feel like I'm
in the dark.

Can anyone help me understand what's going on? Thanks.

Hi stm, welcome to the cardio forum.  I am sorry to hear about your grandfather.  I cant really speak for what could be causing this to happen as there are many things that could make this occur.  One could be medications, or if he has any kind of heart arrhythmias or irregular beats.  I would suggest that you speak to someone in your family who would have reliable information on what is happening with him.

Please do keep us updated on how he is doing and know our prayers are with you both.  Take care

I went to the hospital yesterday, and the nurses had everyone dress up in bunny suits. He has a lung infection, and the doctor added a drain tube to each lung.

His eyes open about halfway, and he moves his arms around.

Unfortunately, my grandfather died yesterday evening. He'd come out of his delirium about a week after
my last post. He and my grandmother gave a "Do Not Resuscitate" request with the doctor, and his
heart stopped again last night. Rather than shock him back, and put him on a ventilator again, they
let him die naturally.

Just an update. Thanks for listening.
