I went to the ER earlier today for sharp pains in stomach, breathing difficulties, and tingling in hands (prob. anxiety, been happening alot more than usual) and bruising on my legs, was on anti-biotics recently..guess that was a side effect? Anyway, I was brushed off as an anxiety patient and I was once again "Backed up" Been diagnosed with IBS... I hate it when I get backed up, because for one it's painful here and there and as an anxiety sufferer I think I will obstruct. I have so much stress because my fiance doesn't understand. He is there for me, but he really doesn't think i'm "sick" he thinks this is all in my head at times and it frustrates me. I went on GERD because a doctor told me once I may have GERD but I was diagnosed w/IBS so never thought about gerd since. I've been getting alot of chest pain lately and when I eat sometimes I get this feeling like it hurts going down. I was on Zantac but I had bad side effect, well..I just felt bad on Zantac. Prilosec won't work for me anymore and Nexium is great but I dont have medicaid YET, so it's very expensive. Any suggestions? And What exactly would be good to eat if I think I have GERD? I already switched my diet since Im backed up again. I also have a slow emptying stomach...so I have to eat frequent small meals.. I am only 22 yrs old, this all happened after I had my baby girl.. my little angel. I am going to this site to see if ANYONE out there around my age range is going through the same thing?? I'm only 22 and I feel like I'm old. The nurse looks at me like "backed up? I only see that in older people" What's wrong with my digestive system..? I was fine a few weeks ago and I thought everything was gone than all my symptoms slowly came back with chest pain?! I just got off Zantac because the way it made me feel. I'm taking Miralax right now for my constipation... Please if anyone is around my age, talking about it would be such relief.. I have no one who will truly understand. I have people to talk to, but they have no idea how i'm feeling and what I'm going through. I feel like my body is just shutting down....which is horrible.. I pray to help me, because I know if no one else, Jesus is always there.

My GERD started when I was 25, so I kind of know where you're coming from. You're still young and don't want to restrict yourself and don't understand what could be happening and why it's happening to you. None of your friends understand.

I have been suffering for almost 5 years and have not done what I should have done to temper the symptoms. Instead, I have gritted my teeth and beared it for all this time, still eating what I want, drinking, etc. I have reached the end of my rope though, as now it looks like I am getting IBS symptoms, too. I've been in the ER 4 times in these 5 years.

My advice - see a GI doc ASAP and do what she/he says. That is hard, and I'm a hypocrite, because I didn't do it, but it's the best thing for you.

Hello Newmother...and welcome to healingwell. I am glad you have found us for support. I am sorry you are suffering so much though.

I have a few thoughts for you.

Are you going to be getting Medicaid soon? You certainly do need to see a GI and see what is going on. A lot of what you are describing does sound like GERD, but you also mentioned the IBS, which could contribute to what you are feeling as well. Along with your anxiety issues, you do have a lot going on.

Until you can get into the GI, here are som suggestions...

Watch what you eat. Don't eat spicy things. Don't eat big meals. Don't lie down right after eating. Just be cautious of what you eat, and how much.

Also, you could try using a liquid antacid, which can be purchased anywhere, and see if that gives you any relief at all.

Get on top of getting insurance, because the BEST advice I am able to give you right now is going to the GI.

If your anxiety issues are severe, I'd also suggest talking to your family doctor about fixing that, and maybe even seeing a pdoc, if it's that severe.

Please, stick with us, and tell us how you are doing, and don't hesitate to ask questions. That's what we are here for!

Wishing you the best!!!

Hi Newmother,
I've had a few of the symptoms you describe, although I have not been diagnosed with IBS, doctors told me I had GERD. Never liked the way the nexium, protonix and all the other drugs made me feel, so I've been searching for a natural way. I was really watching what I ate for a while and managed to control my reflux during the day. I really didn't have the acid burning feeling but I could definitely feel like food or something backing up into my esophagus, especially at night. So I started looking into slow stomach emptying posibilities and what to do about it. Well, I've been taking digestive enzymes along with slippery elm and glutamine among other things and they helped. However I was starting to feel nauseated and feeling like I needed to throw up, probably from food just staying in my stomach and going bad in there. A friend of mine from India recomended fennel seeds, and they have made a world of a difference for me. I had the best holiday season food wise, because I would eat and then have my seeds at the end of my meals and I felt great! And I'm almost back to a flat bed again. (Had to tilt it a little bit to prevent reflux at night). You can find them at an oriental market, not sure if they have them at regular markets, they are only $2, you should try and see how you feel.

Also, whenever I'm feeling backed up like you say, I take Natural Calm, its a magnesium supplement that loosens up your muscles, including your intestines and you don't get any cramping or anything painful.

i really hope this helps you!

Believe me I got my whole family hooked on fennel seeds now.
Just take a about a 1/4 tsp. after meals.

Good luck!
