For those of you who have been there done that...a couple questions regarding your NF surgery. I don't have a pre-op appointment with my surgeon since I just met with him this month. I'm just supposed to meet with a nurse to do some lab work a few days before my surgery and go over some questionnaires. I thought I'd ask around regarding the following info instead of bugging the doc's office, none of it's a really big deal - I'm more curious.

Did you have to do a bowel prep?
Did they give you oral antibiotics before surgery that started a couple days before or IV antibiotics the day of?
Did you have a nasal gastric tube thingy (whatever the call it) when you woke up?
How many nights were you in the hospital? My doc said he's pretty sure it will just be one night (unless something unplanned happens). Did you get bored or were you too medicated or uncomfortable to care?

Thanks!! yeah

**NO! Thank goodness

Did they give you oral antibiotics before surgery that started a couple days before or IV antibiotics the day of? **Antibiotics before are standard practice for surgery. I received IV antibiotic before going into the operating room. I continued to receive IV antibiotics after surgery.

Did you have a nasal gastric tube thingy (whatever the call it) when you woke up?
**I did not have a nasogastric tube. However, Porcelain Doll did and I have heard of others who had it. I was lucky and only had a catheter when I woke up and it was removed the next morning.

How many nights were you in the hospital?
**I was in for two nights which was fine with me. I didn't get out of the operating room until suppertime and didn't get to a hospital room until around 8 PM. My surgeon did not want me discharged the next day at noon as he wanted to ensure I could eat and keep food down. Rest and staying put was good in my opinion and may be part of why I am more comfortable at 12 weeks than some others who had surgery.

My doc said he's pretty sure it will just be one night (unless something unplanned happens).
**He's correct. Most people stay only one night. However, if you don't get to a room until late in the day, ask for that second night.

Did you get bored or were you too medicated or uncomfortable to care?
**I didn't get bored. I watched TV and snoozed and got regular doses of morphine. I also sipped herbal tea, sucked on ice and sipped chicken broth. I was too uncomfortable to care and was glad I wasn't home because at home I wouldn't have rested as much.

I had no nausea nor did I have any medication to prevent nausea.

I found I could suck on ice starting in the recovery room, chicken broth went down better than beef broth, if the hospital screws up and gives you coffee or tea don't drink it - no caffeine (it stimulates the areas you will have had surgery on and you don't want them "jumpy")

GOOD LUCK AND I WISH YOU AN AMAZING OUTCOME!
