I was diagnosed with GERD and yet I don't have any burning in the stomach or chest.   I have nausea and my doctor says its from the GERD but I also have IBS as well.   I never had nausea until I had food poisoning a month ago and now its non-stop.    Does anyone else have GERD without the symptoms?    I'm on Nexium and Librax and I'm wondering if maybe the Nexium isn't working.   I was switched from Prevacid back in September.   I was just switched to the Librax this past Friday from Robinul Forte.   I'm at my wits end here and not sure if maybe I should be on some different medication.

Hi there Meryl. You can have GERD without having the heartburn, or burning feeling. That is a possiblity.

The usual symptoms of GERD are generally heartburn, regurgitation, and nausea. That doesn't mean you have to have all of the above though.

Although, heartburn is generally the main feeling of having GERD. That is generally what gets people to get checked out, and find the GERD in the first place.

All people get different symptoms, and react differently to treatment.

Can I ask, what tests did you have done to get diagnosed with GERD, and when were you diagnosed?

Do you have ANY issues of discomfort going on in your chest or stomach, other than the nausea, and your issues with IBS?

Hi Tammy,

I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy back in October and my doc says I have GERD with a minimal case of Gastritis. I also have a small hiatal hernia.

Besides the nausea, the only other issues I have are bloating and constipation.

The weird thing is before the food poisoning episode, I was okay and only had minimal bloating which I was able to resolve from Phazyme.

I am wondering how your doctor came to the conclusion that you have GERD if you presented with NO symptoms at all. Hmmmm.

Keep us posted as to how you are doing!

Hi Tammy,

I have a call into the doctor today to determine if I should change my medication. I'm also hoping my hypnosis sessions help as well for the anxiety which does make the symptoms worse. I will definately let you know what happens.

Thanks.

I look forward to hearing how it goes for you Meryl!!! Changing your medication may be the route to go. I am also interested in how the hypnosis for your anxiety goes!

I will be waiting to hear from you again!

Good Luck!

Hi Tammy,

Checked with the doctor and she recommended I stay on the current medication and it seems to be working. The hypnosis sessions are working great and I haven't been bloated since I started seeing him and I've been through 3 sessions so far. He specializes in IBS so I think its working great. He is also helping me with my anxiety problem as well. The funny part is I'm actually eating things that I shouldn't eat for IBS and I'm not bloated or nauseous anymore and all I can say if I hope it stays that way. The paxil and Librax are really helping the anxiety and I'm also doing self hypnosis for Anxiety as well and its helping too.

Hi Meryl. I did not have the typical symptoms of GERD that is why it took 3.5 years to discover what was wrong with me. I started with the feeling of not being able to swallow properly and then the feeling of something stuck in my throat. They said it was all in my mind! about 1.5 years later I started getting crushing chest pains. They told me that they thought I had had a mini stroke! Then I started getting asthma! Then I was told I had hypothyroidism (which I don't). After 3 years I started getting heartburn (burning in my throat and chest) and was eventually diagnosed last autumn. I was told by my consultant that I have atypical symptoms therefore it is harder to diagnose. Thank goodness I got there in the end. Anybody else have a similar story?
Elaine
