Hello. I'm from the UC forum. My UC is well under control but I my GERD issues seem to be worsening. I don't know much about GERD so looking for some advice.

Does GERD cause you to have a very poor gag reflex? My gag reflex can be really bad if food smells strange or if it tickles the back of my throat. I can feel myself wanted to gag depsite having no nausea and still feeling 100% fine and hungry. I also get a lot of tastes in my mouth. I can have problems swallowing and during my first 2 hours of sleep I get a lot of acid reflux and regurgitation.

Are they symptoms of GERD?

Thanks,

D

Hi Damo :) Our GERD moderator is on leave at the moment so I thought I would pop in here because I suffer from acid reflux and like to check in here on occasion. When you say that you have strange tastes, when does this happen the most? I get alot of weird tastes in my mouth after I wake up. Having difficulty in swallowing was my first sign that something was wrong. It then proceeded to having a painful "lump" in the middle of my chest and stomach pain along with nausea. I told my GI this and he prescribed me Prilosec (Omeprazole) which is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) and slowly my reflux problems went away. It definately sounds to me that you are having acid reflux issues. How late do you eat at night? Do you have dinner close to bedtime? If so, you might want to eat a little earlier in the day and when you go to bed, sleep with your head and upper chest elevated. This will keep the acid reflux down. Are you on any meds for this right now? When you take your Uc meds, do you take it with food?

Red,

I'm glad u responded as I've been doing an experiment and it seems the GERD is being caused by Asacol (the mainteance med for my UC). Now I have had GERD all my life but it definitely has been worse since I used this med.

I've been off Asacol for 48 hours. My GERD is now gone, my stomach is now fine and my appetite is really really brilliant. Even my BMs are better. Could it possibly be that the very med I'm taking to control my UC is affecting my tummy and even worsening my BMs.

Asacol is apsirin-based from the little I know. And I presume that "acid"-y type substances make GERD worse.

I'll post this on the UC forum too.

Hmm wasn't sure where to respond to you - here or the Uc forum! lol But since this is related to GERD, I will keep it here. I just wanted to give you a word of caution regarding the Asacol. Be careful because even if you feel it isn't doing anything for your Uc, it can very well be and I would hate to see you flare again. But in regards to it causing stomach upset, I believe my acid reflux had started because of me taking Asacol for many years without eating food first. It was after I switched to Colazal that things went even further downhill - so I'm not quite sure which med was the worse for me in relation to my stomach.
