I have not visitied this board before. I have Crohn's disease and recently had some bad symptoms with difficulty swallowing so yesterday I had a Upper Endoscopy.

My Dr discovered a hiatal hernia and very red/inflamed stomach. He told me to take 2 Prilosec oTC a day and referred me to a surgeon and I have to get an Upper GI xray.

I am not familiar with the surgery but am worried about recovery time and if it is worth all the recovery. I am overweight and could try to lose some but my Dr said it still may be there and surgery may be a good option.

I am on immune suppressing medication for my Crohn's so I may take longer to heal.

any suggestions or good websites to look at would be appreciated.

thanks,
karen

Hello Karen,

I have had surgery for Hiatal hernia last year, but also had the open fundoplication done at the same time and that was a long healing process, but well worth it in the end.  Anyway, I had a friend who just had it done and it only took her about a week and she was ready to go.  Only 2-3 days of being pretty sore and she said after that she just took it slow and it faded away.  As you said it may take a bit longer for you with your conditions, but in the end you will be glad you did it.  I am not really sure what othervtests they will put you through.  I went through several, just to make sure, but I live in Thailand and maybe our systems are a bit different.  The tests must all be the same, but which ones you get and in what order and the descisions may be different.  I hope I helped a little.  Wish I could do more for you.  All the best.
