Hey Everyone....

So right around the end of Feb. 08 for no apparent reason I started feeling:
  • Dryness in the bottom of my throat.
  • Patches of dryness.
  • Horse voice if I spoke for more than 15min straight
  • No heartburn, no extra gas, burping or anything kind of reflux

I went to my regular doctor a few times and nothing was diagnosed correctly. The dryness and soreness continued through the entire month of March. Again no symptoms of heartburn, gas, buring or reflux.

On March 31st, 2008 I went to see an ear, nose and throat specialist.  He:

  • Numbed my nose and throat and stuck a fiber optic lense up my nose and down my throat
  • Said my lower throat was red and irritated
  • Diagnosed me with acid reflux sore throat (I guess this is GERD?)
  • Prescribed Protonix (Pantoprazole) 40mg once per day

I took Protonix for a few days and experienced:

  • Feeling very bloated
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constant burping
  • Started feeling acid reflux, bad taste in back of mouth
  • Stoped taking Protonix after a few dosages.
    • continued feeling the reflux symptoms, especially after dinner, during sleep, and when I wake up.

Returned to ENT on April 23rd:

  • He just said ok, try this instead
  • And prescribed Aciphex 20mg once per day before breakfast
  • This drug seemed to fix the the reflux and acid but
    • left me burping all the time
    • And I read all this negative stuff about it here http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=20973&name=ACIPHEX
    • So I stopped taking Aciphex.  The last dose I took was the morning of the 29th.
    • I seemed to be ok most of today (30th) until I ate dinner (two chicken breasts)
      • a lot of burping still
      • I could feel the reflux staring up again :(

Anyways, I sorry about all the blabbing, but I wanted to get all the facts out on the table. I am not one that likes to take drugs at all. Normally it's a last resort. I hate all the side effects of these drugs.

  • Does anyone have any ideas of the condition that I have?
  • Any ideas of natural remedies I can do to help with this?

Hi there, and welcome to healingwell. I am sorry you are feeling this way. This is a great place for you to come to get information and support. I would suggest you read old posts, as they hold a lot of answers!

First, I need to ask, did you go off the Aciphex by yourself, or with the help of your doctor? You should never go off any medication without doctor supervision!

I would suggest you try a liquid antacid, as they seem to do a lot to coat the throat and stomach.

I would also suggest you eat a proper diet specialized for acid reflux. I will pull up the post where you can get ideas of things NOT to eat.

I would also suggest you read the post about minimizing gerd symptoms, and I will pull that up as well.

As for you reading negative stuff about Aciphex, I would suggest you talk about the good and bad of any drug with your doctor. Every drug has side effects. Not everyone will have the side effects. You have to weigh the good with the bad when it comes to taking any medication. Are you in such pain that you are willing to suffer through some possible side effects? Or, are the side effects too much for you to bear? Keeping in mind that you may not experience even one side effect, I do think instead of reading information and letting it freak you out, that you go ahead and tell your doctor the concerns you have about the side effects you have seen, and go from there.

Please do keep us informed as to how you are doing, and please, talk to your doctor as soon as you can...as I do think you should go back on the Aciphex.

Once again, welcome to HEALINGWELL...I do hope you stick around.

Wishing you all the best!

No, my doctor said that if I start feeling side effects to go off the drug for three days and then start again after that.  He said if I continue to have bad side effects that it isn't the drug for me. So that is where I am at right now. In the midst of the three days w/o the drug.

Where did you say that post was on things not to eat and minimizing gerd symptoms? Thanks

Right now actually all my symptoms are hard to guage because I am sick with a bad cold. mad I am gonna wait until I get better to store assessing things with a finer level of detail.

Hey, sorry, I didn't pull up the post yet, but am going to go do that right this minute!!!

I too have a bad cold, so I am feeling for you on that!!!

Thank you for clarifying what your doctor was saying about the medication. I was thinking you went off it yourself, in which case, that isn't the best thing to do.

I am going to find those other posts right now and bump them up for you!

Atown,

I have the same type of reflux that you do. The typical treatment for it seem to be TWO doses a day of reflux meds such as Protonix, Aciphex, or, in my case, Nexium and Zantac. The reason for the two seems to be that the effects from a single dose only last 8-12 hours, leaving your throat to face the acid that's being produced during the off times. I had loss of appetite and some soreness under my left ribs as my only side effects.

I was instructed to take my meds one right before dinner and one before bed. (I was choking awake from my reflux in the night - the nighttime med has stopped that in its tracks!) Also, it seems that these meds can interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients: specifically iron, vitamin B12, and calcium. I was feeling rundown by week 3 of my second go-round on meds (prior to that, I had 2 months on another dosage), but that all cleared up too when I started taking a good multivitamin with breakfast, when my med levels are at their lowest.

Anyhow, I suggest continuing to share your concerns with your doctor. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the advice Percycat. Well since I left my last post I decided not to start up on the Aciphex again. I took some OTC Prilosec in the morning the last three days and I have been pretty good during the days. I am avoiding green veggies as they seem hard for my stomach to digest. I also drink a lot of carbonated water which seems to help my stomach digest.

I think most of ALL my GERD issue is from stress. So that is what I am trying to change the most. My lifesytle. I am practicing breathing techniques before I go to bed, trying yoga, and trying to worry less about things not in my control. I think I will be able to make the most gains in these areas. It's working so far. I would say my symptoms are 50% better than last week. If gains continue I will starting taking 1/2 a pill per day by the end of this week.

Thanks again
