I was told about a month ago that i had Gerd. I found out thinking i was having a heart attack at the age of 31 but it ended up being gerd. I feel so bless to have found this forum cause now i know i am not alone in this . This is what happens . I do feel like a have food stuck in my throat or like someone is chocking me . I get the feeling of tightness in my chest and sometime it is around my ribs.  I get dizzy alot and just feel bad (sometimes like i have a cold ).
I have had the ekg test done , blood test, even a CT and all have came back fine . I dont have insurance but found a doctor to look at me and he gave me nexuim 40 mg . It helps but i get headaches from it . I have been on the nexuim for about 3 weeks now .. It seem to work great at first but now i am back to the same systoms but not as bad ........ YET....... . Being that i have no insurance i cant get light ran down my throat or really anything cause i dont have $2000 dollors to pay for it . The doctor has been trying me on diffrent samples to see what works best for me . I would say the thing that bothers me the most is the chocking feel of my throat and the chest tightness . I wake up thinking about it and go to bed thinking about it . Can anyone tell me what i can do to take some of the stress away .  I really just want to feel normal again . I think the stress of being sick is doing more damage to me than the actual sickness

Jenny,

I understand what you're facing, as that's how my reflux (LPR in my case) usually acts too. The only thing I don't have is the dizziness. It does make you extremely anxious to feel that choking or hard to inhale sensation. I had to ask my doctors repeatedly if they were sure that I couldn't choke to death or suffocate from the reflux, and they reassured that it's impossible. It took a long time for me to let go of that stress and worry, as I'd had the breathing trouble for 3 years before being properly diagnosed with LPR.

I too got headaches from starting on Nexium, but they went away in a week or so. Also, earlier this year, I was taking Nexium once a day in the morning, and my symptoms did come back after 3 weeks, especially at night. Now I take Nexium before dinner and Zantac at bedtime and feel great(both prescribed by my doctor). I think the Zantac works even better for me than the Nexium.

Good luck to you!

LPR stands for laryngopharyngeal reflux. It occurs where the acid rises all the way up your esophagus and sits at the back of your throat. Treatment and testing for LPR is a little different than for GERD. From what I've read, most of us with LPR are on two doses of reflux meds daily, and mine was diagnosed via a throat scope *after* two GI scopes came back perfectly normal with no signs of GERD-type damage to the esophagus.

I think the doctor i am seeing wont be giving me the nexuim anymore cause i cant get the light ran or anything cause i have no insurance and i cant afford $2000 dollors.
So i am asking all thats out here ... Which OTC meds will work the same has nexium or better . I cant be without any meds ... the pain is to much .
