I started to get heartburn really bad about a year ago.

Three weeks ago I went to see my doctor because of distention of the stomach (I look pregnant), major gas, diarrhea, bloating, constipation, nausea, pain followed by intense hunger, having to urinate a lot before the pain and hunger begin.

He gave me a prescription for Prilosec which I have been taking, but it has not helped.  I take Tums, Maalox, etc and nothing helps.

I am not sure if it really is GERD.  I do have the Acid Reflux, but maybe it's more.  Anyone have the symptoms I listed?

Hi redfathom and welcome. I do have similar symptoms to you, but I still in the early stages of diagnosis so I don't know what to tell you except you aren't alone. What tests have you had done?

I have severe GERD, and Prilosec did absolutely nothing for me; neither did PepcidAC/Tums/Maalox/Pepto, etc. The only thing that gave me relief and cleared up my esophageal ulcers was Nexium.
Female, 22, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in hip & lumbar region of the spine from long term prednisone use.

Current Meds:
10mg Lexapro (for depression/social anxiety)
Digestive Advantage: Crohn's and Colitis formula (2 pills per day, started 5/14/08)
125mg Azathioprine
4800mg Asacol (Four 400mg tablets, three times a day)

Hello All!!

I have not had any tests done. I have a GI consult next Tuesday yaaayyy!!! I really can't wait. My BIL has to get a colonoscopy done and I belive I do too, so we said we would be colonoscopy buddies and go together (since you need a driver). We both want to get a hydoscopy (? on name) we found some clinics that will do it...any info on this? We are going to wait to ask our doctors (seperate doctors).

Also, any info on swallowing air. I think I do this to try to force my burbs up because they get tight in my chest. Now my stomach is sticking out like four extra inches :(.

Hi Red,

If you are having really bad heartburn and Prilosec doesn't work...that's not surprising because it is very weak.  Ask your doc to prescribe Nexium and see if you get any relief...the purple pill seems to be the magic one that usually works for everyone and if it doesn't, then you don't have Gerd most likely.

Your symptoms could also be, along with heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, which has the side effects you mentioned.  Gerd can also have the same side effects depending on what you are eating.  Gerd and heartburn patients must change to a Gerd diet, sleep with your head and torso elevated at night, usually have to give up caffiene and alcohol and soda.  These are big Gerd triggers.

The next step is to get some tests.  I think you might be referring to an Endoscopy where the dr looks down your esophagus into your stomach with a tube with a light and camera on it.  This reveals to your doc what your esophagus looks like and your GE junction and stomach.  You may have a hiatal hernia that is causing your heartburn.  You cannot know for sure until you have some tests.

Hope you find the answers.
