Hello Everyone:

Besides medication, do you take any probiotic or enzemy to help GERD symptoms? If so, can you give names? Thanks a lot!

Most people take the probiotics for bowel problems.  For Gerd, lots of people have had good results with digestive enzymes.  There are several brands at health food stores. Just ask the clerk.   I wouldn't suggest getting any with hydrocloric acid in them.  Same as stomach acid.

Thank you! I asked my GI specialist but he does not think either would help. He gave me Prilosec 2/day for 4 weeks. I think Prilosec is working but I want to be off after 4 weeks. I want to keep my heartburn in control using natrual food/supplement.

I will see my ENT in a few weeks and will ask him the same questions. Will keep posted.

My GI recommedend that I try a Probiotic.

He did say that those ones in yougurt and drinks, are too weak.  He sent me off to the local health food shop and said to get a tablet that has more than 1 billion bacteria.  I found one that has 3 billion and I take x2 a day.  It's helping, I think.

Hard to tell 100% if it's working as my GI changed all my meds at the same time as starting to take the probiotic.  But I'm currently feeling much better than I have in a long time so gonna keep doing what I'm doing. :)

I bought a probiotic (MegaFlor) which has 3 billion or so bacteria.  You put it in the fridge.  But I have since heard about Custom Probiotics (bought over the internet).  It has many more strands, so it might be better...

I use a probiotic that contains 50 billion bacteria, and it is used in some hospitals here in Canada.

It is called Bio-K+Cl1285.  I personnaly use the fermented milk formula which has the constancy of a liquid yogurt, but i know they also make it in capsules. But i find it hard to swallow, so the liquid form is more interesting to me.

I have been told that it is the most concentrated and efficient product there is on the market at the moment.

dorval99, i've been told that about EVERY probiotic that I was advised to take (that it's the best one on the market)...there are sooo many different brands because probiotics are the new, inn thing to take...

custom probiotics can have up to 200 or more strands...

bio-k contains a strain of acidophilus that is registered at the Pasteur Institute in Paris as a medical discovery.  If you look on their web site you can look at testimonials from doctors and clinical studies they have made in a major hospital in Montreal.  They have been able to control a c.difficile epidemy a few years ago with this product.

It is not necessary to have tons of strains that are not perticularly efficient. What is important is to have a few good strains that have proven to be efficient to solve health problems.

don't take my word for it. check it out at www.biokplus.com

dorval99, that sounds great.  I'll look at the site.  I hope that they sell it here, in America (or that I can get it shipped to me)?

The kind that my friend SWEARS by though, is called Custom Probiotics...

I have been taking MegaFlor.  I was told that it is awesome.  It has 20 billion viable strands, and 14 billion strains.  It is refrigerated.

I just took "the Activia challenge" - one cup a day for two weeks - and I cannot believe that I no longer need to take Prilosec, which I couldn't stand to go more than a couple of days without. When I found out that Prilosec was one of the eight drugs doctors wouldn't take themselves, I read up and was really horrified. Terrible heartburn is miserable! Zantac was no longer doing a thing for me.
Now, every a.m. I have two tablespoons of ground flax seed in orange juice (or water or some other juice, but acid free/low acid oj makes it taste more like regular oj w/pulp. I also take acidopholus tablets, one in the morning and one at bedtime, and the one cup of Activia. I can't believe how it has done the trick for me.

thanks, dorval99...I actually think that the problem with my situation is not that I don't have a good probiotic, but that I have taken so, so, so many antibiotics, and ALSO was an anorexic...Therefore, no matter WHICH probiotic I try, it will take a looooong time to get better!
