Hello everyone,

I have been diagnosed with Hiatus Hernia and a irritated stomach. It has been about 3 months since my diagnosis. I have altered my diet radically. I eat things as low in sugar as I can get them...perferably no sugar, low fat, low diary (have recently switched to lactose milk), eat as much organic foods as I can, cut out all red sauces, no chocolate, no fried food, no high fat food, no alcohol, quit smoking back in Jan.

I take 40mg of Protonix. I have tried Prilosec and Aciphex. Neither of those worked. I used to have burning so bad it would make me light headed. The Protnix has helped make the burning tolerable but it is not gone. I have also lost 10 pids which is good as I am a little over weight. I am 5'2" and weigh 154 pds.

I try to reduce stress by drinking herbal teas, I have switched jobs to a less stressful postion, I listen to a progressive relaxation tape before bed ...my hypnotist gave it to me to quit smoking.

I mean I feel like I am doing all I can do here and I still burn off and on...Should I contact my doctor again? I have been on this med for about 1.5 months..and while it helps it isn't gone

Should my burning be gone? Do you all still experience burning? Now, I never have it in the morning or wake up with it in the night so I guess thats a good  thing. Mine seems to start around mid morning and go all day until I get home from work and eat my dinner. Then it goes away. I take my pill around 4:00pm so maybe thats why it quits at  night?

I don't know..at this point I am willing to try anything but I dont know where to turn for help. Its more my esphogus burns....I ate some cheese potato soup last thursday in a restaraunt...thougth it would be okay because the type I buy at the store doesnt bother me ...HOLY COW ..been burning ever since. So yeah I am not perfect sometimes but MOSTLY I do stay on a GERD diet.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Oh and I can't take Apple Cider Vinegar..burns the heck out of my stomach..also can't do Aloe Vera Juice..burned bad when I tried that.

I can take ONE bite of  a cookie and it burns just to give you an idea of what my burning is like. I see all sugary foods as poision now and wont touch them.

Hi and welcome :) You need to contact your doctor again because no, burning is not normal and it should not interfer with life especially if you're on medication for it.

Hello Glimmer48

Welcome  to HealingWell and the GERD forum.

If you have been on the Protonix for 1 1/2 months and you are still experiencing problems then yes you should follow up with your physician.

You may do better taking your med at a different time of day but with the hiatal hernia it is hard to know what is happening so please do consult a professional.

Keep posting as we are here to support you and we care.

Sincerely
Kitt

Thank you so much for your responses. Yeah I am calling the doctor tomorrow. I think I have gotten so used to having some burning..it is becoming a way of life. But then there are days it gets really bad and I feel like crying like today for example and I wonder...which is stupid I suppose. I didn't realize until I kept a log today how often my stomach actually does burn throughout the day.

So calling the doctor tomorrow.

glimmer,

Kudos to you and I am proud of you for keeping the log.  Now off to the Doctors and I hope the solution to your problems is a simple one.  I will say a little pray for you.

Thank you.

I talked to my doctor yesterday and he said the hiatus hernia and irritated stomach should not be causing all this burning. He thinks its due to stress but would like me to try for the next few days doubling up on my meds and taking tums in between meals. If in 3 days I am better...then he said to try it for a week. If I am not completely well in one week..he wants me to come in for further testing. Which I can tell him I won't be well in a week. I don't think I have been completely well in months to be honest.

Thanks for your support. Sometimes it helps to know others out there are struggling with maybe these same issues.

Holy Cow ..last week. I had ONE CUP of potato cheese soup from a restaraunt thinking it might be soothing because I can eat it from a can and I am fine....I burned for a week straight...just now it is starting to abate a little ...That is not right...Food doesnt even stay in your system that long..so I know it didn't continue to burn because of the soup but I am saying that got it started and once it starts...its hard to put out that fire.

Glimmer,

I am so glad you are following up with your physician.  I agree you are having a lot of burning and that is not fun so keep working with your physician until you come up with a plausible cause for the burning.

Hugs

Kitt
