Meet your new Moderator, Kitt

Hi,

I am Kitt and I volunteered to moderate this forum as the topic is close to my heart. I have GERD and have had it for 10 years.  I am a retired RN, 26 years working in ER/ICU and then as the Nurse Manager of Emergency Services and Respiratory Care. My husband and I have 4 children, one of our boys was killed in a car crash in 1990.

My husband has Crohns and was just dx with Prostate Cancer.  WE face each day by believing...........we support each other as well as others.  We are just ordinary people.

I have A & P and Depression, GERD, IBS and herniated disc but they don't have me.  devil  I  joined HW after being with a strictly Mental Health site as a moderator for 10 months. I felt I needed to branch out and belong to a group that covered medical and mental health issues. The people here have become family to me.

I have always been a care giver but have learned to take care of me now so I have no more guilt over doing something just for me.

I believe I have a good sense of humor and I love to help others. Team work is very important to me. I am proud to be a part of this forum.

I am glad to be here. I hope you will feel comfortable emaiing me any problems or issues you may have.  I will do my best for you.

Kitt

Hello all, well I just wanted to let you know that I volunteered for this position as Tammy is very busy and not able to be on much right now but I do hope we get to know each other well and I hope you will soon learn that I am here to help you as well as be a member of the forum.

I hope you will all soon feel comfortable with having a new mod.

I find each of you to be  supportive and very knowledgable about your conditions.  This is not a fun disorder to have but we will join together as family and continue to help each other.

I am here because I choose to be,  I want to belong to this forum.

Respectfully

Kitt

Hi Kitt,

Thank you for sharing your challenges and joys with us. I could tell from some of your posts that you truly are concerned and want each of us to deal with out illnesses with dignity and find the best solutions.

We are blessed to have you with us. My husband also has Crohns. I'm so sorry to hear that your husband has to deal with cancer also...Crohn's is challenging enough. I hope we can give you the support you need also.

I'm curious about you having Gerd for 10 years. I think you said you had never had the surgery. Have you been on medication for 10 years or do you control your Gerd naturally. Sometimes, I feel like I'm wimping out having the surgery after only almost 4 years with Gerd, 2 of which it has gotten worse. Do you have regular endoscopies? What stage are you with your Gerd or have you gotten it under control?

Hugs,
Sillylilly

I love the name. yeah My problems start out with stomach pain and heartburn. I used to buy Rolaids by the bottles and my PCP started me on the liquid Mylanta as he felt it was much better........hard to carry in my purse smurf .

He finally sent me to our gastroenterologist and she checked for H-pylori which I was hoping I might have and then we could get rid of the problem.

No luck there so I started on Zantac, and then onto the PPI when the regurge started.  I have been able to identify most of the trigger foods that will cause problems and with avoiding them I have been able to effectively manage the GERD.  I did have one bad flare and ended up in the ER after being up all night with severe pain and burning into my chest and jaw. No heart problems so after some IV Protonix and IV Valium I was discharged on 20 mg of  Prilosec twice a day.

I did have issues with difficulty swallowing for a short time and I would not order any meat when out in a restaurant as when I went to swallow the meat  it would get stuck and I would choke so I ordered soft easy to swallow foods and ate very slowly.

I aoid fatty, spicy, or acidic foods and eliminated bedtime snacks.  I usually try to sleep on my left side and I have to still conquer avoiding ice cream especially custard.

So far I have managed fairly well.  I am so fortunate compared to what many have to go through.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome.

Gentle Hugs

Kitt
