Hi all,

I've had acid reflux for the past 3 or so years (22 now). It's been manageable with prescription medication (40mg Zegerid per day at the moment). For the past 4 months, my throat feels like it's closed all the time...either that or it feels like I have a big lump in the back of my throat. I dismissed it as anxiety/throat spasms, but now it's been accompanied by me producing more saliva than normal. First I went to the ENT, and he said my vocal cords were a little swollen and that it could be from GERD, and gave me a nasal spray. Then I went to the GI doc and got an endoscopy, and they said it showed a mild reflux, but nothing to be concerned about as long as I'm taking my medication.
This feeling in the back of my throat is driving me crazy though! I hiccup quite often, and it just overall makes life less enjoyable. Any reccomendations on what this could possibly be? The last four months have not been fun because of this tight throat feeling.

I sincerely appreciate any advice/comments on my situation. Thanks guys!

Hi there! I had/have this feeling. The acid has damaged my oesophagus and affected the swallowing function. The only way I could ease the phlegm/saliva/lump slightly was to increase my medication (on advise from my GP) so I was taking 60mg (20mg 3 times a day).

Do you get burning in your throat?

Not too much burning. It's just weird that they said the endoscopy came up fairly normal...all they did was double me from 20mg/day to 40mg/day. Maybe it takes more then a few months for it to heal?

My endoscopy came back pretty normal too so I don't think that is anything to go by. It took about 5 months for me to start feeling the benefit. :-)

Elaine,

Didn't you have the Nissen surgery?  Why do you still have to take medications.  Didn't the surgery stop your throat symptoms also?   If not, that is really a bummer...and I feel bad for you.

Lokk...it sounds like you are having what is called LPR symptoms.  Did your ENT mention this to you.  As I understand it, there isn't alot of consensus on LPR among ENTs.  It stands for Laryengeal Esphoghageal Reflux.  YOu might do a google search and find out something about it.

Yeah I just checked out a few pages with info on LPR, and it seems I have almost every symptom exactly as described. Which doctor handles this...ENT or GI doc? I'll go make an appointment when I know which one to see.

Yep I had the nissen but because of the motility problem I still have some issues. I also have some burning which we are looking into at the moment. May be my gall bladder. sad

My surgeon told me to take the PPI as it helps with the phlegm problems but I have come off that now as it aggravates the gall bladder!

LOkk... concerning which doctor to see for LPR, and since all the med forums are for everybodies benefit, why don't you look at www.heartburn-help.com message board. They have a special category for LPR and all your questions will be answered better than I can. Best of luck.

Hi Lokk,

I have the same problem and I've had it for 3 months now. It's so frustrating! My regular doctor doubled my Nexium. I went to see an ENT cause I really thought there is something on my throat and he said my throat is swollen due to GERD. I asked if I needed some antibiotics and he said the double doze of Nexium should fix the problem in 6 weeks. That was 7 1/2 weeks ago and I still have it and sometimes I think it's even worst. There are days that are worst than others, but I have it everyday. It feels so bad that I'm having anxiety over it and I have taken many vacation and sick days cause there are days I just can't make it to work with this condition. I made an appointment with a GI doctor on Monday. I hope he can do something about it. I think he will do an endoscopy and I'm not sure how that feels. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone on this condition and maybe it really is just a bad case of GERD. I hope!

for almost 3 years I was on 40 mg of Prilosec a day GERD, stomach hurt, Dr's said the same things irritation..blah..blah..
One of my friends told me to start a regimen of 4 Flax seed oil tablets a day (1 at breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime) along with 8 Acidopholis/probiotic tablets a day ((2 at breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime along with the flax).
It took about 3 weeks but my stomach started feeling better I was still taking the prilosec but dropped the dosage.
Another month later i totally stopped the prilosec.  Another 2 months and I changed my intake to only 2 of the flax and 2 of the acidophilus/probiotics a day.

Here I am 3 years later and I only take 1 of each a day.  Those days if i overeat or have too much fat I also take digestive enzymees and might take another flax and acidopholis.

My doctor said...if it helped you...then dont stop.
My throat is healed and no more GERD symtopms. Excercise more, watch my diet and don't eat at night past 6:30-7.
feeling very happy.

I am not a doctor, but this worked for me.
