Greetings:

I am new to the forum, but started reading it a few months ago when I developed gastritis/GERD.  An occasional IBS sufferer, I had never experienced GERD and didn't even know what gastritis was until last February.  Seems like one day I was just nauseous and it the beginning of a long drawn out stomach thing.

I think it developed slowly due to Advil, coffee, a glass of wine, nerves, etc.  None of which was excessive, just over time, messed up my stomach.

Anyway, it was a daily misery for weeks/months.  I took Prilosec, Mylanta, anti-spasmotic drugs, gave up anything that I thought would be an irritant.  I had the bloodwork, ultrasound, and then an endoscopy.

I'm sure doing all of the above helped, but what I think finally turned it around was I started drinking a lot of those vitamin waters (or the Life Water is good, too).  Sounds too simple, but it really helped.  For a couple of weeks, I'd mix a little aloe vera juice (had heard that might help), but then just the plain vitamin water.  (Glaceau, I think).  I just noticed that every time I would drink them, I would feel better, so I'd drink one on my way to work and one in the evening, too.

I took some weeks, but little by little, I was better. Now, I feel completely back to normal. (After about six months of this misery).  I still drink one bottle of the vitamin water a day, but I've also been able to add back a cup of coffee and a glass of wine and all of the food (i.e. tomato sauce) that I had given up.  (I still take Prilosec each day, but I really think I could give that up.)

Hope that helps.  :)

Really? I guess everyone is different. Mine may have been more of a gastritis than GERD. (Although I thought they were kind of similar) It lasted so long, I thought I would never be over it. I googled just about everything I could think of to get advice. I’m not sure if the aloe vera juice helped, but it may have. I tried vinegar a time or two which sometimes helped, sometimes not. No telling how many bottles of Mylanta I took over the course of these months and Prilosec. Mine seemed to be upper colon/stomach spasms and nausea….the worse symptom – ha.

I was out of ideas of what to drink because juice, coffee, tea, cokes, wine etc. were not beverages that I could tolerate. Anyway, I picked up one of these waters (citrus flavor) in the grocery store one day and I thought it made my stomach feel better so I started drinking them religiously. And they are not cheap - $1.00 to $1.89 each is what I have paid. But, they seemed to make such a difference for me that I would stop on my way to work (a pain – ha) and pick one up if I was out.

Anyway, now I’m back to normal it seems. This started the beginning of last February and lasted until the end of August. Kind of tapering off slowly as time went by. So, there is hope gastritis sufferers if you can find what works….but it does take time!

Kay,

Glad this worked for you. I have a sister in the hospital with cancer right now and on chemo.  She is drinking the vitamin water to keep her hydrated as it is one of the few drinks she can tolerate.  She likes the orange flavored.

Take care and keep on posting.

Kay, a friend of mine drinks a shot glass of AloeVeraJuice before each meal.  She swears this has totally helped her.  She buys it at WalMart.

Somewhere above citrus was mentioned, but I have read to stay away from citrus juices, because of the acid.

I only drink water at this point.  Getting kind of tired of only water.  Oh I do have some applejuice sometimes, as I found a brand that is pure apple juice, not made from concentrate.

Kay, I'm so glad you are feeling better!  :-)

Hi, Kitt:

So sorry your sister is not well. I hope she will get through her treatments and be just fine. My older brother just finished chemo treatments for colon cancer, but we really feel like he will be fine.

Thanks, Mary, for your nice words. Actually the vitamin water was "citrus flavor", so no acid. I couldn't tolerate juice (i.e. orange) for a long time. Too much acid. I think they helped me because they gave me something I could drink a lot of....besides water, which I hate to say I was tired of. Anyway, I have tapered off them a bit, but still drink one every day or so. Can eat and drink pretty much what I did before, but I will be so careful in the future and no more anti-inflammatory meds for me.

Also, I wanted to let gastritis sufferers know that it may take a while, but you can get over it. Just be patient and do the common sense stuff. :)

Kay,

I am very happy that you are feeling better.  I know my sister was drinking the orange flavored mineral water.  I believe you said you were drinking the "citrus flavored".  I know somethng different then plain water is a treat.

Thank you for you kind words about my sister.  I am hoping she will get well.

I am glad you have a positive outlook for your brother. I will keep him in my prayers.
