Well, I was diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus about 2 years ago and have been taking Nexium twice a day, 40mg each.  My recent endoscopy saw that I do need an Esophagectomy.  I am horrified, petrified, scared to death.  I've asked questions, read all I could on the surgery, talked with my surgeon but I'm still petrified.  This is major surgery.
Has anyone out there had this done and could let me know.
I'd appreciate any help from anyone.

Hi KatieSue

I am scheduled for an esophagectomy on Oct 6.  I am scared to death but the thoughts of getting cancer is scarier.  I will keep you posted.

Katie Sue

I had my espohagectomy on Oct6.  It was more than I expected. A portion of my esophagus was removed, stomach detached, and my esophagus is connected directly to my intestines (roux y).  I spent 2 1/2 days in the ICU.  The Dr told my family I would be in the hospital 10 - 14 days but I was able to leave sooner, I was released from hosptial on Oct 12.  I have a j pump and a gastro tube sticking out of my stomach that I have to drain 3 times per day.  These ttubes should be removed agt my followup visit in two weeks.

The pain hasn't been as bad as I expected it to be.  I am taking a liqued pain medication.  I am on an all liqued diet but additional foods will be added.

Even though I am still have pain from the surgery, nothing unbearable, i can tell you that I feel better than I have in a long time.  I am no longer clearing my throat all the time, coughing, hoarse, or congested.

I am glad I had the surgery and hopefully you will feel the same once you have yours

Great support ceetay.

Katie, keep on talking to us and know we are here for you. Don't be afraid to voice your fears, you have a good reason to be afraid.  The fear of the unknown is frightening.  Try to stay in the moment and not anticipate the worse.

Gentle Hugs
