Hi all,

I've been reading with interest many of the symptoms of members of this site, and a few of them ring true with me.  My history is:

Had a small stomach bleed from anti inflamitories (Dyclofenic)
Was put on Lanzoprazole
about 1 year on Lanz, suddendy developed ache and gnawing under left ribs, severe bloating, constant supply of gas!
Pain under ribs was only helped by getting rid of gas (forced belching)
Started to cycle between diorreah and constipation
Intense periods of heartburn, and along with those heartburn attacks i would develop an irritating cough
Started eating a better diet, cut out caffine, wheat etc - which helps a great deal, but still frequently have the pain under the left ribs and heartburn

Does this sound familiar to anyone?  Any advice or thoughts are appreciated

Thanks

Welcome gsteruk

This is Kitt.  Yes your sx do sound like GERD/Heartburn.  I am wondering if you have seen a Gastroenteroogist for you sx.

These sx can also be caused by other problems and you are welcome to read through the threads but remember we do not take the place of your patient/physician relationship.

Thanks for the welcome Kitt,

I've seen my doctor, who diagnosed IBS, but offers no real solution. Pills are handed out - like lanz or omeprazole - all of which are great for the heartburn, but tend to make the gnawing pain worse as the seem to give me more gas!

geteruk,

The reason I asked if your Dr is a GI Doctor is you made need to have an endoscopy and a GI Doc is trained to deal with diseases of the digestive tract.

What blood studies have you had?

Take care.

Kitt

Kitt,

Had full blood works, B12 was low, recieved treatment and is now at a normal level (this will be confirmed this Friday). All other blood results were normal. I was put forward for an endoscopy at the time of the bleed, but apparently they couldnt complete the procedure - my gag reflex was too sensative. I was out of it and dont remember a thing, but they are reluctant to try again. The docs seems content that as the bloods were ok, its nothing "terrible" - but easy for them to say. I perhaps get 2 weeks per month (on a good month) when then symptoms are minimal, then out of the blue the heartburn kicks off first, then the ache under the left rib, excessive gas - which as long as i continually burp to get rid of lessens the pain a little. Just seems no end in sight, and no real resoultion. I had heard that perhaps magnessium supliments can be successful?

I also have some GERD symptoms and some IBS symptoms.  I will be going to a GI once I get a new job with insurance.  I had been in the emergency room twice after food poisoning but vitals have been okay.  The first time there was some strain on the liver and kidneys.  I have been in discomfort for about 4 months now.  Severe fear of eating has developed. The safe foods for me are applesauce, tortiallas, toast and bananas.  Insoluble fiber is very difficult.  Meat is impossible.  Dairy carries with it strain on digestion and GERD like symptoms.  It will be hard for me to tell if digestion has recovered fully eventually because the reactions from certain foods was so traumatic.  The chicken noodle soup sent me to the emergency room the second time.  It felt like my system was going haywire, my pulse in the neck was going crazy, it was like it was having a hard time digesting.  Maybe the noodles.  Maybe because I had a whole can.  Maybe because of the animal fat.  I am not certain but I have no desire to have any form of meat again.  I see some progress from 2 months ago however it is still frustrating.  I am 42 and this has been extremely difficult on the system.
