Hi,

I'm not really new, but I'm not online that often. I have gerd and crohn's disease. They did scope a couple of years ago and my les doesn't close well. Originally I was on nexium, which helped, until my insurance company wouldn't cover it anymore. They switched me to prevacid solutabs, but found that once per day wasn't enough. I was taking it twice a day until the insurance decided not to cover that much. Then I discovered that if I cut one tablet in half and took it 2x/day it usually helped but not always. That's what I have been doing for awhile now. I am curious to know if anyone has found help with otc prilosec??? If so, is 20mg enough? Is it safe to take more? I had to move to another state and don't have a doctor at the moment. Are all these ppi's basically the same med? I see the names are a little different, but shouldn't one work as well as the next? I've been taking 20mg prilosec for a couple of days now, but it wasn't working well. Not sure if it's the change in meds, or if the chinese food I had was too spicy. My thinking was that if I've been on one ppi then a new one should work just as well, even though the package says it may take several days for relief. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Good Morning,

I take Prilosec every day............once a day. I do not have an answer for the plan you have  to try some manipulating your meds.

I know everyone has different success with the meds they take.

Hopefully one of the members will be along to share but do to the holidays, please be patient.

Happy Holidays to you.

Saddaze it usually works for me. There are some days when I am popping rolaids. But just once a day never worked for me. I always needed the next dose before 24 hours was up. My doctor seemed surprised when I told him what I was doing but then started prescribing them to me that way. I just found out that my insurance company is not going to cover my prevacid anymore. Right now I'm doing ok on the otc prilosec. I know they usually recommend taking the ppi's first thing in the am before eating. Because I need to take a painkiller with food I didn't do that. Usually not a problem, but I started doing it with the prilosec and maybe that is what is helping.
