Well after 4 failed attempts in the last 3 1/2 months by my GI doctor to dilate LES/ Nissen Fundo I am being referred to the Mayo clinic in Minnesota. I am wondering if anyone has any experience there for Nissen Fundo. problems? The last year plus has been VERY frustrating with the dysphasia. I was told after the last EGD/dilate that if this didn't work they didn't know what to do. Well, it didn't work. Only managed to cause more discomfort without helping the dysphagia at all. So they sent me back to the surgeon and he recommends going to the Mayo Clinic since the GI Dr. couldn't pinpoint the problem.
I'm sure they will want to do all the tests again for themselves, which I just LOVE by the way. Does anyone know if they try to do them in a relatively short period or spread them out over a couple weeks? I live about 5 hours away and was hoping they might do things in just a few days. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Hello Bill,

Welcome to Healing Well and the GERD/Heartburn forum.

I am sorry you are having so many problems. I cannot answer you on what protocol Mayo goes through but if they are like any of the big facilities, you are scheduled into time slots that are available.

You are lucky to live only 5 hours from Mayo, I would consider that a blessing and just pray that the physicians are able to help you.

Again a warm welcome to you.

Kitt

I got a call from my surgeon yesterday. They told me everything is set up at the Mayo Clinic. No dates yet, still waiting for my insurance to OK the referral. Should know something on that possibly as early as Friday, but I expect it Monday or Tuesday. If they let me go there it's gonna be strange. I've never been to a place that big, looks intimidating just to find your way around.

You just get comfortable with the doctors in your area, then they want to send you off somewhere else.

Oh Well, what can you do.

Bill

Well, Mayo Clinic isn't an option now. My insurance won't cover it. They will however let me go to University of Iowa hospital, one in Missouri, Nebraska, and a couple around Chicago including Northwestern.

I have to follow up with my surgeon to see what is next, but he did mention Iowa City once before, just not his first choice. Anyone familiar with the G.I. Dr.s there?

Thanks,
Bill

Kitt-
The U of Iowa hospital is a teaching hospital. I also have a choice of the U of MN. hospital as well. A friend at work told me the U of Chicago was a good choice also. They did a liver transplant on his father several years back with great results. So now I get to go see him again to go over what my best options are.

Well the insurance says no to Mayo, and the University of Iowa has a 6 month waiting. My doctor said we aren't waiting 6 months. So it's off to Loyola University Hospital in Chicago. I couldn't find much info. about them on the web. It's worth a shot though, just hate driving in Chicago.

Well, made the trip to Loyola University. It was a lot better than I expected. I actually got some answers instead of the "I don't know" I've been getting for the last few months. Unfortunately they want me to have an up to date manometry, wire 24 hour ph study, and barium swallow done. I just LOVE the wire ph study.
I found out the Bravo ph study I had done in Dec. '07 may have been a false normal range due to me having a Nissen done and they have to "guess" where the LES is. Oh well, gotta love the tests we endure. Just have to wait the three and a half weeks until my next appointment.
