Whilst I was posting in another section about some medication questions...i realized I am on 3 medications for acid reflux. Do doctors really prescribe that many or am I being overdosed?

Zantac 150mg 2x day (300mg total)
Prilosec 20mg every morning
Protonix 40mg 2x day (80mg total)

Thats 400mg of medication a day I'm putting in my body. Please any thoughts? I nearly wasnt this bad til I got sick and started prednisone and immuran.

Hi Smurfy; without knowing your situation it would seem that the addition of the Prilosec is redundant. It is not unusual to have the Zantac with the PPI. IMO, Protonix is better than Prilosec; it has less side effects generally. Zantac will control breakthrough acid, but only for a short time and only for limited period; if you've been on these for some time, you may want to check with your gastroenterologist.

Tell me, are these all prescribed by the same Dr?, if not, that may be part of the situation.
Good luck,
Janice

Hi this is Kitt.  Janice has a good oint re the protonix and prilosec.

Remember meds are not equal mg per mg so don't count the mg as much as the medictions that are in the same classification and that is what you want to know from your physician.

Take care and Happy New Year

Kitt
