Hello everyone... new to this forum and love it. I wish I had surfed here as a resource a couple of years ago. I am a 37 year old caucasian male. In spring of 2006 I had very bad dyspepsia. A GI doc scoped it out for me quickly and we were both surprised to see 2 ulcers in my stomach. He did a pathology that came back negative for h. pylori and non-cancerous. He immediately put me on PPI. First tried me on Pantaloc which did not work, and then Pariet which did and continues to work well (on the max dosage - 2 x 20mg per day). He re-scoped in the fall of 2006 and everything was clear with no ulcers. GERD generally under control save for a few acute attacks... which I actually think were more gallbladder-related.

Fast forward to November 2008. I've gradually noticed a decreasing ability to swallow effectively. Ironically it was the small little Pariet pills that made me really start to notice this. It's to the point now where I chronically have a lump feeling in my throat and continue to have trouble swallowing. Strangely it seems to be with smaller foods like popcorn, little bits of cereal, and peanuts. When I chew gum and swallow saliva I really notice it bad. It seems to be best in the morning, but gets gradually worse throughout the day until when I go to bed when it is worse. It feels like there is a dull piece of leather in my throat. I have also lost 15 pounds (8% body mass) but can honestly say that this happened during a time of diet and exercise... but it did seem to come off like water, almost too easy.

I saw the same GI doc again and he's going to scope it again in mid-February. He told me that he is reasonably sure it is globus hystericus (I have a high stress job and the first to admit that I am the world's worst hypochondriach) and not to worry. But given the easy weight loss and dysphagia he did want to scope it to r/o esophagheal cancer. He also ordered some nasty blood tests, like c-reactive protein which is an infammatory test used for cancer. When he told me this I sunk and haven't been able to think straight since. I am freaking out. At this point in my life I wouldn't have dreamed that I would have to worry about having such a terrible terrible disease. Do you think I am overreacting? Is it common to get dysphagia when you also have GERD? Sorry if this is a dumb question. :(

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Hello and welcome to HealingWell and please know he is only doing blood tests.  Many people never hear anything said past the word cancer when they are in the Doctors office.

It feels ot me like you are experiencing a little health anxiety as the Doc is running a blood test for cancer.  I actually just had one done that I requested for Cancer to make sure I did not have one particular cancer.

Try to avoid the unproductive worry. Unproductive worry is thinking about things you cannot control.

Take a break. Don't saturate yourself with stressful information. Try not to google this test and read everything on the net................Challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking.

Remember we are here for you so know we care.

Again a warm welcome.
