Hi all,
This is my first post on this forum so Im a newbie.  I recently got over an esophagus ulcer which the doctors can not give me a straight answer how it happened.  I had a constant feeling something was stuck in my throat then wham extreme pain over about 2 weeks the chest pain was unbearable.  I was on all the ppi's prevacid, protonix,  then reglan, carafate.  I never seemed to have heartburn but I have a large hiatal hernia.  Now im just stuck with a constant sore throat,  and crappy feeling in my esophagus I failed the bravo ph test with very low numbers all the time.  what im wondering does anyone else have a constant sore throat with no heartburn.  Im miserable and hate this so much its been 6 months like this for me.  My doctor is recommending the nissen surgery and im very confused if it will help me or not.  need some insight folks please help.

Welcome to HealingWell and the GERD forum.  I am sorry your having such a rough time.  We have many members that have had the Nissen procedure and I am sure you will be hearing from some of them re your sx.

I have not had this sx nor the surgery.

Again a warm welcome.

That sounds like acid reflux. I also don't feel burning but when I have an episode, it's that feeling of something stuck in your throat or sore throat.

Hope this helps!

I never have heartburn, but my throat gets tight (often on just the right side) and I sometimes have to clear it a lot from the mucus it's producing. Very occasionally, it gets sore like when you're getting sick, or my voice will get tired. My doctor, an ENT, is treating me with just Nexium and Zantac. At my 1-year check-up last week, she said there was a lot of improvement, but my larynx and throat still aren't fully healed. She has never suggested surgery, but then, she's an ENT, not a GI doc.

ugh.. I very much understand this however for me... my GI docs.. all I have been too can't find anything wrong.. no Barretts esaphagus, no hiatal hernia.. so for me its very frustrating. For me liquids are hard to do. It feels like whenever I eat and drink anything. It feels like stuff is just sitting up in my throat all the time like it may want to just come up. I have to sit all crouched forward for hours after I eat to keep everything comfortable and down, so now becuase of this I have horrible posture because its the only way I feel comfortable. Yet I have had two endoscopies, and gastric emptying scans.. nothing found...everything appearently normal. Its frustrating.

Serendipity, I actually have the exact same symptoms and problems. I've had a choking sensation for about two years now and the doctors have no idea. The barium swallow came back with nothing. And all tests show nothing. I don't even get heartburn with GeRD but my GI doc is treating me for GERD anyways. I'm wondering if you ever had a breakthrough in diagnosis as I'd like to ask my own doctor to look at other possibilities.

Hi All
I am new to this forum, having been on the search now for some understanding, perhaps I have found it here.
Anyway, I have same problems, sore throat and feels like I have a lump in my thrat ALL the time.  ENT says it is inflammed larynx casued by LPR. The problem for me is a severe reaction to the PPI's - I cant take them atall as I am one in 100,000 or whaever it is, to suffer from physcotic type reaction to them. No way can I try them again, it took me 3 months to get over the bad reaction.
All other tests are negative, PH study and Deemester score of 8. No espohagatis, but lax LES. However, also negative on the pepsin test.
So I am at a realy loss to understand how this stuff comes back up because I just dont feel it and if it were, I should have a positive pepsin test.
Any suggestions? Does anyone have LPR but not feel any reflux atall?

You don't necessarily have heartburn with GERD. Does it take awhile for your food and drink to go down? Like ... if I eat or drink something then bend over right away it stays in the back of my throat. Very uncomfortable. I've had my esophagus stretched a few times. I remember having a test done (and I really wish I could remember the name of it for you) where I laid down on a table with a machine on top (sort of like a CT scan if you've had one). They gave me a bit of liquid to swallow and then I would swallow like every 8 seconds or so for a few minutes. It showed that it took a long time for it to reach my stomach.

I had LPR. My LES was completely eroded away. My esophagus and vocal chords were burnt from acid. My vocal chords were so bad in fact, that they didn't open and close properly (still don't sometimes) and I couldn't get a full breath. This wasn't diagnosed right away. One year, 3 hospitals and several specialists later they figured it out. Needless to say by that time I was miserable and suicidal from not being able to breathe!

At any rate, I had a partial Nissen wrap to repair my LES. Absolutely no GERD at all since then so no more damage to my esophagus or vocal chords. again though, I still have problems breathing sometimes (like in humidity or somewhere there air isn't as good.. perfumes kill me) and I still need my esophagus stretched (which I need done now but don't feel like going lol).

Final words, I'm very happy I had the surgery done. I can only imagine what would have happened if the acid would have continued to erode my throat!
