That's great to hear. I knew you could do it. Your throat will be sore for a while. I found out they may intubate me before going into the OR. Now that doesn't sound like fun. Anyhow, I am glad all is well and now get some rest and start healing.

Take care,
Bill

Hi Bea,
I'm so glad you're on the other side...the road to recovery. Be sure to stay on the pain, and don't let it get ahead of you. It shouldn't be too bad, though. The more you walk, the more you'll get that gas out of your belly. It'll also help keep the shoulder pain at bay. Get up regularly and stroll around your hospital floor--the more the better. Try to get some rest in between nurse visits!

Don't forget to INSIST on an elixir/liquid pain med to take home. I got it in the hospital, but wasn't insistent enough to get it for home. It'll make it so much easier. Did you get some liquid motrin or tylenol for when you don't need the pain meds any more?

Your sore throat will get better soon. Glad you're doing well.
We're rooting for you! Take care and get some sleep!
Denise

Hi Bill...intubate before the ER? They'll put you into a trance first, I'm sure. You'll be in la la land...don't worry! When do you go in for surgery? Doesn't our friend Bea sound like she's doing great?

She sure does. But then again I knew she'd do great. I am scheduled for May 18th. A little over a week to go. Since I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea they said they may do it that way, but they also said they can't believe I have it because my airway is so large and I don't have the short think neck. So she said they will decide that on the day of surgery, but usually as a rule all apnea patients are intubated before going to the OR. I hope not.

Some people can burp and vomit with a successful wrap. Don't let that sway you. Let the lack of symptoms be your judge. Remember that it can be a while before your body stops being hyper sensitive to acid and such.
Make sure you go real slow with the food. If you go to fast or over do it, you will pay for it. I learned the hard way. This time around I will be way over careful. How's the shoulder pain? Get some rest and relax.
Well, I am off to the ball diamonds again. The team I coach took the weekend off, but our organizations older team needs a pitcher and my daughter doesn't know how to say "no" to softball. At least I can sit on the bleachers and watch this weekend. Kind of nice actually.

Take care,

Hi Bea,
See that?  I knew you'd do just fine.  We build it up so much, and worry about everything, don't we.  Once it's done, it's surprising how easy it was.  Really, don't worry about the burping.  I started with little burps right away, and worried a bit, too.  I was so ready to not be able to burp (my surgeon said I wouldn't), but I was.  It's hard not to start second guessing things and worrying that things aren't right, but you shouldn't.  Burping is normal for some wraps, and not for others.

Also, a few weeks after surgery, I started getting heartburn sensations, but I know now that they weren't heartburn.  Your esophagus is a 'dumb organ', and perceives any irritation as heartburn.  Once things settled down, I never got the sensation again.

I don't know if your surgeon told you, but your wrap will become increasingly swollen during the first two weeks, then will begin to reduce after that.  I noticed at Day 4, I started having some spasms, so don't be surprised if your swallowing gets a little harder as the wrap swells.  it's normal.

Hope you're getting lots of rest!
Sounds like you're doing great.

I had another italian ice today and 4 spoons of pea soup. I really enjoyed the soup. I must say, I am amazed at this. Im thinking "Is this 2 ood to be true?" Am I in for a shocker? But I know I have you guys who have supported me and guided me through this. Without you guys and my family god I would be lost.
Well each day gets better!!!

Hi Bea,
That's exactly my experience.  I was prepared for a horrible post-op, and it never was.  Remember when I told you that?  I experienced so much worse with gastritis/GERD attacks I had.  I'd take the surgery any day.  And, by the way, at about 10 weeks, I'm eating absolutely anything.  I just have to remember to chew it well.  I went through a stage of eating fast and not chewing well enough, and it irritated my wrap.
Get lots of rest, and enjoy your italian ice!

Remember I told you if it was so bad I wouldn't be willing to do it a second time. Now YOU get to be an inspiration to someone else. Guess that is some unwritten rule :). Seriously, someone will read our posts and it will help them to be strong enough to follow through and probably change their life for the good. I can't say how much it thrills me to hear how well you are doing. Please go back over Denise's posts and follow her advice. She has a very fresh memory about this and had some wonderful advice. As I said before, I wish I had this site at my disposal the first time around. My daughter thinks I am nuts. I was talking with her after her games today and told her I was getting a bit nervous. She looked me straight in the eyes and said "Dad, you weenie, you already did it one time. what's the big deal?" Aren't teenagers wonderful? I would have to say you experienced what I considered the worst part of it... the NG tube! I swore I would never have another one again.....I will probably be made a liar.

Take care,

yes guys, it is really weird that i dont feel so bad. Im burping .little ones, eatin a little but i can afford to lose sum weight. LOL Bill, believe it or not your daughter said that through her own fear. She was being strong 4u.My daughter said something similiar. Also, what we will do to stay alive. Life is more important. I am 44 and lord knows I have to be here as well as you guys. NG even a feeding tube anything to help us exist a bit longer in this beautiful world.Denise, I have no asthma. My lungs are so very clear. I am happy Im healing ok. Im sore but its a small token. The doctor said it was a classic nissan wrap .They didnt have to cut any major nerves etc.Maybe this is why my reocvery isnt too bad. While I was waiting for my surgery ,I met a woman named Nancy who was getting the same surgery.she had a hiatial hernia the size of a pinapple. She didnt do as good as me.I was drinking liquids etc.She remained in the hospital when I was leaving. I prayed for her. She did tell me whatever comes her way will be better then the pain she has and cant wait to et the surgery over with. The doctor who did hers said my surgery was easy becuz it was an easy wrap.Hers required so much more. I do know she is fine and thats what matters. Se is just having a slower recovery but she will make it.anyway time for bed for me. Im rootin for ya bill.Thanx denise
thanx

HI Bea,
You'll lose weight, because you won't be able to eat much...even when you're past puree and liquids. Your wrap/stomach is swollen, which makes it stiff (according to my surgeon when I asked him). That creates the feeling that you're very full, even after just a little food. I lost about 18 pounds. So far I've kept it off. I could definitely gain weight now, if I'm not careful. You don't have to worry about that at this point, though! I don't get that fullness anymore, the way I did. Sometimes my wrap feels irritated a little.

I TOLD you that you didn't have to worry. Keep a positive attitude, accept the recovery as it comes to you. It is as it is. If you keep a positive attitude and don't get anxious to hurry things along, you will find the eating recovery better than you ever imagined. When do you go back to your surgeon? What is his eating philosophy? I've heard of surgeons who ask patients to go with liquids for a long time. Mine put me on soft food going home from the hospital, and after 5 days, when I visited him, he let me eat anything, as long as it could be chewed to a liquid. That leaves a lot of leeway.

Rest, relax, and don't second guess your recovery. Remember that you're very likely to have some esophagus and wrap irritation. Don't worry about it.
Also, as the wrap gets more swollen, your eating may get a bit more difficult for a week or so, before the swelling goes down again.
You will do great!
Glad to hear things are going well for you. Glad you had an uneventful surgery! I think most people do. It's just that the ones who search out and post on the internet are more likely to do so after having problems.

I know what Bill means--this site is a godsend--giving us support and information from people who have been there, done that. Doctors haven't experienced the surgery the way we have, and can't tell you the important information that your fellow Nissen travelers can.
Have a great day1

I have to baby myself for the waps sake.He said i was a beautiful operation. Him and another dr did it. I really am impressed ,all those hours i spent wondering the unkown, the fear.who knew. Your rite,it is mainly the recovery that is the hardest part.I just actually have something now to slow me down...the recovery.Ive always ben on the go. Not no more.
Today my grandaughter Haley came with my daughter niki. I really miss holding her but appreciated my daughter only staying for 2hours. I couldnt go on pass that with Haley,i was exerted comp;etely pooped. Im laying in bed now.

Have a good rest, Bea. Glad you got to see your daughter and granddaughter. How lucky to have a granddaughter! My kids have been married for six years and all I have is granddoggies! My daughter in law is a PA, and she's just finishing her MBA...she's really a high energy person and is always busy. They're talking kids, and I know they want them. They just bought another house, so I know it's a matter of time. My other son isn't married yet.

Glad you're having a good day. Sleep well.

I couldn't get mashed taters to go down for over a month! I am jealous, I loved mashed taters. It will definitely help to do some walking, just don't over do it. You can get tired really fast. I got taken off of work today until after when ever I can go back after surgery. The doctor who I have been seeing about the nerve pain in my ribs wants me to get an epidural since the cortisone nerve blocks don't work anymore. Guess I start my "summer vacation" early. Now I have to go get the paper work filled out for short term disability at work. I love dealing with HR.
I can't wait for grand kids either. My son is only 18, so I guess I shouldn't rush it. I sure do miss little ones though.

Take care,
Bill

Hi Bea,
Glad you're feel well. You're lucky the weather is nice enough to get outside and walk. I had to walk on the treadmill--and started it the second week I was home. Glad you're enjoying some interesting food. Be inventive!

Get up every so often all day, and walk around your house. Do you have any shoulder pain? Mine wasn't too bad...just nagging and irritating...not excruciating. The walking will help you there.

Have a good evening.
Thinking of you!

Bill,
I had to stay home before my surgery because I'm a teacher and they were afraid I'd get sick. I was on prednosone, which made me even more suseptible. Rest, relax, and enjoy your time off.
Good luck with that surgery. Are you having it locally, or do you need to travel? When do you go?

Take care both of you!

Let's see... Irish + calm = that doesn't add up. At least not in my family it doesn't. I get to let them know I have 2 sets of paper work for them to deal with tomorrow! I love to stir the pot! Nananana I have a doctors excuse blahhhhhhh! Then they make funny faces and mumble under their breath, something to the degree of hating I care not to hear. Oh I loath the trips the HR heathens. It really does make for an entertaining time.Seems all off them have watched the omen several times, spinning heads and pea soup spewing.
Sorry, for I know not what I write. It could be phycho babble or maybe by the slightest of chance it is true. Who are we to judge the all powerful OZ of HR? I apologize for ranting away. Though I swear I am not inebriated. Just feeling quite well with a lack of rib pain tonight. I shall see how long the epidural will last. I am at 7 hours and holding ......If I get 12 hours I will be amazed.
I thought it over tonight and I am bringing the laptop to the hospital, Now if I can find somewhere to plug it in I'll be set. Won't be nothing else to do but type away. I hope the spell checker works. Everyone is going to be so annoyed with me when I get out. Let's pray I only stay one day Now should I stay 5 days, well then every one at the hospital is fair game! Did I happen to mention I hate hospitals? The only way for my to past the time is by causing some sort of mischief . I am kinda ornery at times, especially when I am bored.

Oh welll,G'nite all

See Bea?
All that worrying, and fretting, and expecting the worst was a waste of time! I'm so glad you're having a good experience. Oh, you'll have a few ups and downs, but don't worry. Any little quirks that come up, will resolve quickly. Just follow the doctor's orders, and chew, chew chew, once you get eating a variety of foods. I haven't had any of those stuck food issues (not to say that I still couldn't), because I've been really careful with chewing. I'm more likely to have it now, since I'm getting to that point where I've start forgetting I've had a surgical revision.

My biggest problem hasn't been the surgery...rather, my lung problems. I got through the lung infection, the flu, the lung infection...had two weeks of perfect lungs (the first time in years), then got a cold (or is it an allergy? I've been going back and forth on that). But, Bea, with all that, my lungs are still better than pre-surgery. Hard to believe.

Well, gotta get ready for work. Another busy day!
Enjoy your time off!

Hahaha Bill, I have 2 sets to fill out too. I will remain calm.I was raised with 5 brothers and I tend to challenge other peoples inteligence.Im allergic to idiots!! I swear for god I have ADD when some 1 sounds like an idiot savant. lol .As for SPELLCHECKER,I could careless. If my daughter Kara read any of my posts, she would melt like the wizard of oz. She won her schools spelling bee ,then, the Staten Island spelling bee champoinship, and on to the New York state Finals where she beat 110 kids. After that, she went in2 the last round to the national scripps where she became nervous and lost.BUT SHE IS A WINNER to her county, city and our state.More importantly to us. If she was to dare read this she would be apalled.I always when they were kids read one page of the dictionary.EACH WORD, MEANING, DEFINITION every night. Here I am writing like I have no sense.lol. It gets me aggravated becuz many times I am sending a post from my cellfone. I can hardly see the letters let alone the mistakes. But i figure, you and Denise know what i meant to say,so the hell with spellchecker.LOL and since the computer lingo allows for shortenings of words i love it.
Denise, i had 3 spoons of smart balance oatmeal. It was amazingly good. (never ben an oatmeal lady) However, i was a little depressed becuz i became full .I know this is part of the recovery, take human bites take baby steps.Im impatient.I have to relax.
Bill, dont worry there is a song "aint it great to be crazy boom boom aint it great to be nuts like us" LOL Im down rite crazy,I am not ashamed. If your an idiot i get freaken crazy and wanna know what was in your gene strand, inteligence NOT!! lol
Take care
