Bout two months ago i began having palpitations and other issues, and after running all these tests, my heart came back fine. After discovering my burping and acid reflux could have caused it they diagnosed me with GERD. I have taken prilosec, provead ( not sure on the spelling), zantac, and bunches of others, and the NExium 40m. im now taking has been bumped to twice a day and i now take gaviscon during the day and at night to control my palpitations. It's been really freaking me out considering i've basically never been sick in my life til now. So at 22, they just gave me an endoscopy (tube down the throat), and everything came back fine. Now a couple days later my throat is starting to close up, i can't eat anything besides bread, and i have to go back in to take some ph 24 hr. test and a swallowing something measure test... Could you guys tell me what to expect or is this normal? no one i know has this stuff and it's freaking me out, cause everyone in my family is going through cancers and other diseases.
thanks,
griff

It's good that you are getting tests done. I was diagnosed with GERD about 15 years ago and was put on Zantac. Everything seemed fine but after awhile I started having palpatations and anxiety attacks. I found out that those are rare side effects of zantac. I stopped taking it and my anxiety attacks completely stopped until today. I was switched to Prevacid a couple of weeks ago.....(imagine that). Anyway, I have argued repeatedly with several physicians that GERD, heart palpatations, and anxiety are all linked but they seem to disagree. So, I hope your test results give you some answers.

Often the cause of your heart palpitations can't be found. It's thought that common causes of heart palpitations include:

  • Strong emotional responses, such as stress or anxiety
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Caffeine
  • Nicotine
  • Fever
  • Hormone changes associated with menstruation, pregnancy or menopause
  • Taking cold and cough medications that contain pseudoephedrine, a stimulant
  • Taking some asthma inhaler medications that contain stimulants

However, occasionally heart palpitations can be a sign of a serious, underlying problem, such as an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia).

Many physician's dx heart palpatations as stress related which includes anxiety.

thanks for the welcome glad to hear i'm not alone in this. Everyone i saw doctor wise kept telling me its very common, and everyone i talked to no one knew anyone with it. *phew* Yeah originally they thought i had super ventricular cardio (?) where the heart goes on a different pulse beat and can become irregular, but everything turned out negative. Whenever i get any of that i pop a punch of gaviscon and the palpitations go away. It's so weird since lately all i can eat is soup and bread and water, and they told me it's not normal for my symptoms to have increased to the worse as time goes on. Apparently for me to even be considered for surgeries (i wish to those recovering from their surgeries recently like bill and b!) the ph test must be taken and gone over. I know the heart issue is even a side effect of the nexium and prilosec and proveade and everything else. It's just scary and kinda freaking me but i feel reassured and hopeful and am glad to know i am not alone.
thanks kitt its a pleasure to meet u!

Griff,

I am experiencing the exact same things plus a couple more symptoms as you. I have had the 48 hr monitor and endoscopy and like you everything came back normal, the 48 hr monitor showed slightly elevated ph for the first day. I am also experiencing the tightness in my throat and some palpitations. The tigtness for me came a few days after the endoscopy. I told this to the doctors and they said it wouldn't have done that. I have also had bad burning in my chest that sent me to ER and then I had an MRI of my heart, everything came back good. The pressure measuring test is what the doctors want to do with me next. I am able to eat and drink okay it's just swallowing saliva that I feel the tighness and it feels like I get a pressure build up in my throat that irritates. What I have been doing for relieve is Zantac 150......it seems to help my burning stomach. You need to continue to go to your doctors and get the tests done to rule out the bad things but the endoscopy would have showed if there's any growths or abnormal stuff going on in esophagus. When I had mine they did biopsies of just tissue to make sure everything was alright.

hi carly!
hmm ill have to ask my doc about the zantac....
now i currently have issues swallowing and also burnign chest pain.  Well yeah i'm glad to hear your doing ok, it's just tough having to deal with all this junk constantly.  And these tests continue to freak me out!  Well at least i know what to expect from the tests, thank you!  Yeah my biopsies came back negative, it gives me a sign of relief and a sign of doubt as to what's going on.
thanks for all the help!
