Hi,

I'm Zadi, a 53 yo female.

I was reading the thread about Bob Barton's remedy for Reflux. I was hoping it was real, but part of me thought it would probably not be.

I recently was diagnosed with a sliding hiatal hernia. I had been coughing up green mucus for over a year and thought it might be a sinus infection, but after using a bunch of different antibiotics, I was at my rope's end when I found out that GERD can cause coughing. It has been a rather lonely journey as my doctor seemed to be no longer listening to me. I have recently started with a new doctor. I had been on omeprazole 20 mg a day and he suggested that I take 20 mg twice a day. This week has been a hard one, chest pain and coughing and more chest pain. I have a coworker who takes Protonix for her GERD etal and has much success, but my doctor seems to think that it would be overkill. He suggested taking omeprazole with food, but since I only got this second hand from his MA, I did not think to ask if he means taking with a little food or with with a meal.  I am overweight, and I know that losing weight would help, and when one does not know what to eat it makes losing weight easier. Today the chest pain and gassiness has been somewhat continuous and at times scary...

Needless to say any thoughts would be great.

Thanks for reading my babbling.

Don't bother, I ended up in the ER with severe GERD and atrial fibrillation. I got put on Protonix, and now on a crapload of other stuff.

Thanks for your replies...oh, I guess that means thanks for nothing.

Hi Zadi, how are you doing now?  I am usually on the fibro forum.  I have gerd and in the past year I too have been coughing up a lot of mucous.  In the morning its mucous and bile and it can really burn.  The other night I woke up choking on it which in turn put me into a panic attack cry    I was really scared even though my husband was right there.  I slept the rest of the night sitting up.

I take protonix twice a day.  I know it helps keep my weight on, but thats life.  I am scheduled for an endoscopy in July.  What makes matters even worse is that I'm a smoker also.  I have a lot of excuses for not trying to quit.  I guess I'm just not quite there yet.

Hope you are doing better.  Lots of hugs to you! wink

We all suffer from the same symptoms and worse. A lot of us have been in the ER and that includes me even though I am only 21. People aren't on here contantly and I'm sure they would have responded had they been online. This type of post isn't going to get you anywhere either, this forum is here for help but isn't gonna be instant success.

Hello and welcome to HealingWell.  I am sorry I was out of town when you posted. I am just now catching up with all the posts on the many forums I cover.

Sorry you felt neglected but please know  it was not intentional.  This is a forum not a chat room so people are not always available to answer posts immediately or someone with knowledge of your concern may not be online.

I am glad your are on Protonix as it is a good medication and I hope you are soon feeling better.

Ask the GI dr to do a 24hr ph test and stomach empty test, also a swallow test. If the 24hr test shows you cough when you have reflux then I have suggestions.
If you have been on the meds for awhile and nothing has helped, ask the GI dr for the best laproscopic bariatric sugeon in your area. I had the Nissen by a great surgeon and have not had any symptoms since. I still have a cough sometimes but nothing like it was and no coughing so hard that I throw up as I did before.

I think the cough that remains is an allergy cough and I take something for that and it helps.

My cough was so hard that I couldn't sleep and finally this caused my blood pressure to skyrocket. Since the Nissen my blood pressure is fine although I still take medicine for it. Before my blood pressure was high even with the meds.

My quality of life is 100% better now.
Best of luck to you.
