I was diagnosed with GERD, esphagitis/gastritis, in 2007 by endoscopy.  My gastro also dialated my throat at the time because food was getting stuck.  I have taken Prevacid (it stopped working) and now take Protonix.  Now, I think the Protonix has stopped working.  I have silent GERD.  My major problems are sore throat, coughing and acid coming up into my mouth.  My cough has gotten to the point where it is  productive in the morning and occassionally during the day, lots of throat clearing too.  I'm also having trouble swallowing and food getting stuck.  I increased the Protonix to 40mgs twice a day and it helped a little but also made me constipated.  So I'm back to just once a day and being miserable.

I guess my question is, will this go away on it's on (I'm under more than usual stress right now)?  Is there anything else I can do?  I could go back to my gastro but I know he will want to do another endoscopy, right?

Good Morning.  I am sorry you are having problems.  If you were doing well at Protonix twice a day, perhaps going back to that dose is your best solution for now.
You can add a stool softner or use something to help prevent costipation.  Colace or Dulcolax. Using Fibercon daily is another way to ward off constipation.

I cannot tell you if your GERD will get better on it's own.  I think each person's body reacts to this disorder differently.

Take care and keep on talking with us.

A great natural laxative that's safe is Mineral oil. Now, don't say yuck! :0 It has no taste and it mosturizes your lips ;). It works great and is not addictive.
