Hi Everyone,
Kinda bummed today... had a barium swallow done this morning and it turns out I now have an esophageal stricture!  I had the same barium swallow done 11 months ago and all was normal!
Is the dilation a permanent cure for the stricture?  Anyone have experiened with it?
We don't really know what caused the stricture, the doctor will do test the eosoniphiles (sp?) in my throat when he does the EGD.
The first GI I went to did a dilation for dysphagia, even though at the time there was no stricture in the esophagus...could that have actually caused this stricture?
Meanwhile, I wonder if my diffuse esophageal spasms (DES) are caused by the stricture? In other words, my E is working extra hard to get the food down?
Also, could the stricture, which is near the LES be Achalasia?
Cant' wait to talk to my doctor!!!
Spasms are bad...

Hi Uncle Leo, I had my nissan almost 9 years ago and I developed the problem where my esophagus doesn't have the peritalsis like it should so have to drink lots of water when I eat to get the food down. Any way I have had my esophagus stretched several times because of stricture since my surgery. My doctor told me now I have to go to UW Madison or Mayo to have my wrap loosened as I can't go to the surgeon I had for my wrap because is not in my network any more. My GI Doctor thinks I need my wrap loosened and my lung doctor suggested the same route. My surgeon had suggested loosening my wrap a year after surgery but warned of more acid coming back up again so I just never went back. I'll probably put it off until I can't swallow any more. Barb

Uncle Leo~~

Don't feel to gloomy! I had a stricture in 2005 the doctor said it was pretty horrible. To my excitement as of yesterday being 2009 I haven't had to get it redialated! :) That was my biggest worry, but then on another hand my friend goes in almost every six months to get hers redone :( So there is hope!
